Midnight black. No head. Aroma is roasted chestnuts, walnuts and chocolate. Taste is malty and sweet with a lot of nuttiness. Some chocolate and coffee with birch at the finish

Nice crisp deep brown coloured body with a ruby and cola coloured tint at the bottom, and a nice two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, nuts, caramel, light milk and a hint of smoked peat (not much). Light-bodied; Sharp roasted malt flavour with not much body, a hint of toffee and peanuts, some earthiness afterwards, and a solid tannic finish. Aftertaste shows mainly dry malt, a little earthiness and a hint of sugars. Overall, a good schwarz, but missing some on the body and a bit of complexity and depth of flavours, but the flavours that are there are very nice, and its much easier to drink than I had anticipated. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 24-October-2012 for US$1.99 sampled at home in Washington on 03-February-2013.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thick, three centimetre tall deep brown head - the body being about 90% opaque! Aroma of sticky, pungent and very resinous hops that show a lot at first, then the scent dies down to licorice, anise, alcohol and tons of roasted malts. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt with a good hop flavour, not overpowering, some pine and citrus notes and little else. Aftertaste shows a relatively simple roasted malt flavour, a hint of earthiness, but a lot of pine and grapefruit hop notes. Overall, surprisingly not as good as I’d expected, but with their high standards, that’s not a bad thing - this beer is good, just not great...good from a roasted malt perspective (no surprise) just not good from a hoppy perspective (once again, not what they’re known for). I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 07-November-2012 for US$8.99/6 pack sampled at home in Washington on 27-January-2013.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a shaker. Pours black with large dark brown translucent highlights and small light brown head. Nice thin small bubble lacing, medium body, medium carbonation, and lactose aroma. Taste is sweet lactose, roasted malt, and slightly tart cherries (wasn’t expecting this). Really easy to drink and pretty good.

Cask at ACAT. Pours a hazy deep amber with a creamy brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has sweet grains, a touch of honey with just a bit of darkness. Flavor starts with sweet grains and is supported by a decent amount of honey, a touch of flora and just a bit of darker grains.

Sample at Mellow Mushroom in Johnson City. The beer is a dark brownish-black color with a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Light to medium body with flavors of mild coffee, chocolate malt and a touch of hops. The finish is sweet with a mocha aftertaste. Decent overall.

Opaque black beer, good light brown head. Softish palate and a tiny bit of dry. Creamy malt, mild dark character. Nice fruits - strawberry with a little cherry and raspberry. Mild dark chocolate undertone. One of the fruitiest porters I’ve had in many a long yonk.

Bottle. Beer of the month club. Dark brown to black-colored with a big, rocky, creamy, beige to light brown head. Aroma of coffee, some chocolate and light nutty notes. Flavor starts sweetish, pretty roasty, with coffee, some chocolate and lactose notes and finishes bitter and roasty, a bit burnt. Medium-bodied. Decent.
