From a 12 oz bottle at home. Pours a hazy amber with a white head. Banana notes in the nose. Flavors of malt. An okay beer but not to my taste.

Tap. Pours opaque black with a small brown head and perfect lacing. Aroma is really roasty, with notes of pine and citrus as well. Flavor is about the same, lightly sweet, light bitter, quite roasted. Medium plus body, creamy mouthfeel. Nice beer.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a one centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of alcohol, bananas, yeast, oak, malt and a ton of toffee and sweetness. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong alcohol flavour with a lot of nuts, earth, toffee and raisin flavour at first with a good grape-y finish and some smooth light hops. Aftertaste shows a lot of alcohol and somehow even more toffee and nuts - very nice. The toasted malt flavour and sweetness comes through nicely, but leaves the palate doused with a lot of taste. Overall, a nice scotch with the flavours you’d expect and a complex profile to finish off the beer. What you’d expect from this brewery - another consistently good beer for the style and one that everyone should sample. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in McLean, Virginia on 04-January-2013 for US$2.49 sampled at home in Washington on 22-March-2013.

Aroma: The aroma has roasted malts, some dark fruits, liquorice, and a booze
Appearance: Pours an opaque dark brown-black color with a thin beige head and spotty lace
Flavor: The taste is has some sweetness to it, lots of roast, and a boozy hit to the finish
Palate: This one is medium-full bodied, it drinks fairly smoothly, and it has a lengthy, hot finish
Overall Impression: This is a pretty interesting beer. It has is an excellent example of the style and a really well-made beer. I liked this one quite a bit.

Aroma: The nose of this one is heavy roasted/burnt malts with some citrus/grapefruit hops too
Appearance: This one pours into the glass an opaque dark brown color with a long lasting, thick froth of lighter brown colored head that completely coats the glass in a sheet of lace
Flavor: Pretty balanced between the strong roasted malts, some burnt notes, and a bitter hop finish
Palate: The body is medium, it has a bit too much carbonation, and a lengthy, dry finish
Overall Impression: This is an interesting beer. It leans toward the burnt malt side, especially in this style, but it also has a a strong hop presence to balance out the malts. Works pretty well overall. On a completely unrelated note, the head retention is pretty spectacular as well.

On draft at the Mad Fox Barley Wine Festival, Falls Church VA. Pours a cloudy amber with an off white head. Aroma of grape soda. Sour flavor. Probably off.

Tap. Pours opaque black, small brown head, nice lacing. Aroma is dark roasted malt, tobacco, coffee, anise. Flavor is the same, medium sweet, anise finish. Full body, creamy, light warming finish. I was really looking forward to this one and it just didn’t do it for me. Oh well.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle poured into a snifter. Pours black with large dark brown hightlights. Little lacing, medium/thin body, low carbonated, and aweful sour aroma. Taste is off balsamic vingar. Off bottle I suspect.

Refrigerated 12 oz. brown bottle best by date June 2012, crap, poured into a shaker. Pours black with small light brown head. Nice lacing, medium body, medium carbonation, and aroma is bad vinegar. Really bad, my first drain pour, need to have this fresh to make sure.
