Description

The restyled and renamed 'standard' blonde by Haeseveld, with the peculiarity of having been brewed with malted spelt and oats apart from barley malt, which is admittedly uncommon in the style; ABV seems to have gone down from 6,6% to 6,0% too, but that does not say a lot. Neither does the mundane cronyism beer writer and editor Ben Vinken applies when writing about this 'new' beer in his Bierpassie Magazine - I personally even consider this discouraging rather than the other way around... Anyway, bottle from the Delhaize supermarket in Lokeren, obtained right before my car broke down - but I will try not to let my resulting bad mood interfere with this review. Thick and frothy, egg-white, dense, slowly breaking head leaving thick patches of lacing over a misty warm golden robe with ochre-ish tinge. Aroma of fresh bread crust, spelt bread perhaps, dried apple peel, hard unripe pear, hint of peach, field flowers, dry hay, honey, chamomile tea, false oat-grass in a summery meadow, young mugwort leaves, dandelions. Sweetish, fruity onset, notes of pear, red apple, some peach and banana, sharply carbonated but still within the range of what you can expect from this style, with a dim sourish accent accentuated by this fizzy carb - but then blending in with the sweetishness of the malts and likely linked to the spelt; pleasantly bready core, with noticeable velvetiness from the oats, cereally and not overly weighed down by residual sugars - instead developing a floral, eventually peppery and dandelion-tinged hop bitterness in a finish which, thanks to the relative dryness and the hops, lingers for a while. Somewhat more hop bitter and less sweet than the stereotypes in this particular segment (think of the blonde abbey beers, for example - referred to by Vinken in his article as well, not irrelevantly so), with some lingering breadiness in the end too, this is actually not that bad, even though it is hardly exciting. Simple, but efficient 'pilsener' replacer, as this style of Belgian blondes is often aimed at. Too bad I apparently never had its slightly stronger former self for comparison.

Haeseveld, a restaurant since the eighties housed in a building dating back to 1909 (originally a florist's residence), taken over in 2019 and since then operated as a brewpub by Huyghe in Melle, may be a pretty place to spend some time on a summery afternoon, but their beers have not impressed me so far - on the contrary, they opted for the very predictable blondes, tripels and pilseners from the start, now supplemented with the equally obligatory sweet cherry beer, or indeed - worse even - a rouge. Medium thick, tiny-bubbled and densely structured, slowly breaking, pale lilac-tinged off-white, generally stable head on a clear ruby red beer with vermillion glow. Aroma of - unsurprisingly - a truckload of red Haribo 'dubbele kersen' candy, the old familiar 'poepegatjes' and 'dropveters', grenadine, white sugar, bubblegum and that is it, apart from, perhaps, some very vague background hints of green banana, wet white paper and dish water. Very sugary onset, one of the sweetest beers I had in a very long time and that even includes other rouges: this is grenadine rather than beer, with this liquid red 'drop' candy flavour monotonously dominating from beginning to end. Carbonation is on the soft side but still prickly, mouthfeel is very slick and more 'filled' from sugar than anything else - the sugars kind of hide the fact that this product has, indeed, a watery body (unsurprisingly at this ABV of course). Pink and heavily sugared, cherry-flavoured bubblegum springs to mind meanwhile, as well as Fanta Red and perhaps a touch of some sweetened pink dairy dessert, but everything remains thin and ridiculously simplistic. Not much more to report here than red candy in watery and extremely sugary form: this is below par even for a rouge, which means comparing it with other ghastly sweet and artificial 'red candy beers', none of which has any serious 'zythological' ambitions of course. This is as idiotically sweet, bland and boring as it gets even within its own dreadful category - I guess Haeseveld goes down yet another notch in my estimation. On a side note, I do wonder if this product is the same as the Belgian Cherry Wheat Beer which Huyghe produces for Marks & Spencer; I guess I will find out soon enough, as I brought a bottle of that one in the M&S supermarket of Aberdeen and took it home to sample. I honestly do not know what got in to me that day.

(Keg at Pikkulintu Ruttopuisto, 20250327) The beer poured dark brown and quite opaque. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had toasted malts, candi sugar, chocolate, earth and spicy yeast. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were toasted malts, earth, candi sugar chocolate, spicy yeast and bitterness. Aftertaste had toasted malts, coffee and bitterness. A brew with good aroma but the taste was unbalanced.

Pours unclear, warm blonde. Medium large white head. Scent is mild, BE yeast, banana, mild 4VG. Taste is full, malty, quite a bit of BE yeast. Banana. Light but present bitterness. Mild 4VG. Balanced, but oh so safe and boring. Medium carbo and body. Fairly dry. Not as sweet as the average BE blonde perhaps, but where is the unique or typical feature to make it stand out in any way?
