Bereits seit über 475 Jahren wird hier am ehemaligen Steinweg, einer alten, überregional bedeutenden Handelsstraße, Bier gebraut. Eine der letzten von zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Straße noch nachweisbaren 22 Brauereien ist die Brauerei Spezial. Das Anwesen der Brauerei Spezial in der Oberen Königstraße 10 gilt als idealtypisches Beispiel für einen Braubetrieb des 16. Jahrhunderts.

Als Begründer der Braustätte gilt nach einer Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1536 der Büttner Linhard Großkopf, dessen Familie zu dieser Zeit noch mehrere weitere Braustätten am Steinweg besitzt. Der Name „Spezial“ taucht erstmals in Verbindung mit dem ehemaligen Besitzer Nikolas Delscher auf, der „Spicial genannt, eyn Bräuer und auch Büttner gewesten ist“. Er betreibt die Brauereigaststätte von 1631 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1664. Seit 1898 ist die Brauerei Spezial im Besitz der Familie Merz. Der Braumeister Christian Merz führt das Unternehmen also bereits in der 4. Generation.

Bottle, one month before bbd. Wow, this is a beauty! Pours mahogany, with a creamy, off white head. Aroma is smoked malts, with bread, bonfire and wooden barrels, as well as toffee, leather and heather. Medium body, with soft to average carbonation. Flavour is malts with bread, caramel and leather, as well as wooden barrels, bonfire and notes of smoke. Lingering smoked malts in the finish. Despite the massive smoke and malts, this beer is incredibly balanced and smooth. A quaffable sipper, if there ever was one.

Bottle, one month before bbd. Pours oak coloured golden, with a big creamy, off white head. Aroma is smoked malts, with bread, bonfire and wooden barrels, as well as leather and heather. Medium body, with soft to average carbonation. Flavour is smoked malts, with bread, caramel, leather, wood and bonfire smoke.

Bottle at work thanks to Johannes. Pours clear dark brown with a thin beige head. Big meaty smoke aromas. Smoky taste, light caramel behind. Nice.

0,5l bottle at home from trade with Maracuja05, big thanks. BB 09.05.2017. dark brown color, small off-white head. smells of bacon, light smoke, spices, some caramel, nice smell. medium body, soft carbonation, slick mouthfeel. tastes rather light, some bread, light sausages, spices, caramel, bit of smoke. finishes lightly sweet with notes of caramel, spices and some sausages. quite nice one, rather light (both smoke / bacon and body), but this makes it quite smooth to drink.

Beatifully dark amber coloured with average height head. Ok retention and little lacing. Not extremely vivid aroma of caramel malts and delicate smokiness (smoked ham, ashes). Taste has a sweet malts base (caramel) nicely mixed with a surprising kind of ’full’ or maybe ’juicy’ umami feel of smoked meat (sorry i’m not really able to describe this better, in a way it reminds of provola cheese if you know what it is) and slight ashes. Bitterness is low to medium with a very nice kiss of floral hops. Light bodied with low to medium carbonation, with an easy and delicate mouthfeel. Overall this may not be a flavour bomb, but it’s just so enjoyable. A delicately rich and splendidly drinkable smoked lager. Excellent stuff.

Bottle, 4.9% alcohol. Beautiful deep amber color, with a small head, disappearing. Aroma is smoked ham, something sour, bread crust, leather. Taste is smoked, bread crust, malt. Medium bodied, lighter than the Schlenkerla. Dry finish, well balanced. Very nice.

Bottle, courtesy of SinH4. Pours clear brown with a thin foam. Aroma is a warm fire, some smoke, and quite some bacon too. Body is medium, with a little but crisp carbonation. Umami, oily, thick. Nice.

Bottle, bb 05.01.17 (thanks santa SinH4!). Pours copper. Aroma is nice bacony smoke, malt. Flavor is sweet and bitter, smoke, bacon, grains, malt. Overall: very good. Bit thin maybe, so fresher sample could be even better

Tap @ In De Wildeman. Nice clear brown color with a dense off white head. Aroma’s: smoked, smoked ham or fish. Additionally some malty sweetness retronasal. Flavor is moedrate sweet, smoky. Light bodied. Long finish with no new flavors. Nice one.

Clear mahogany with a medium off white head. Aroma had sweet roasted malt, caramel and hints of smoke. Flavor was sweet with roasted and smoked malt. Finished sweet.
