Bereits seit über 475 Jahren wird hier am ehemaligen Steinweg, einer alten, überregional bedeutenden Handelsstraße, Bier gebraut. Eine der letzten von zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Straße noch nachweisbaren 22 Brauereien ist die Brauerei Spezial. Das Anwesen der Brauerei Spezial in der Oberen Königstraße 10 gilt als idealtypisches Beispiel für einen Braubetrieb des 16. Jahrhunderts.

Als Begründer der Braustätte gilt nach einer Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1536 der Büttner Linhard Großkopf, dessen Familie zu dieser Zeit noch mehrere weitere Braustätten am Steinweg besitzt. Der Name „Spezial“ taucht erstmals in Verbindung mit dem ehemaligen Besitzer Nikolas Delscher auf, der „Spicial genannt, eyn Bräuer und auch Büttner gewesten ist“. Er betreibt die Brauereigaststätte von 1631 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1664. Seit 1898 ist die Brauerei Spezial im Besitz der Familie Merz. Der Braumeister Christian Merz führt das Unternehmen also bereits in der 4. Generation.

Brown/ruby with big beige head. Aroma is lots of caramel, raisins and bacon. Taste is sharp sweetness with umami bacon. Quite heavy and thick. Not for me!

Clear ruby with medium wite head. Aroma is smoky bacon, some noble hops, grass. Taste is umami, sweet malt with normal hop bitterness. Not so heavy on the tongue, much bacon in the finish. Bah.

Cloudy golden with medium white head. Aroma is herbs, toast, light hops. Taste is easy going hop bitterness with fresh sounress. Good carbonation, refreshing, easy. Really nice!

Rating #3333, Holzfass, late November 2016. Ruby-brown color with tan head. Aroma is sweet caramel malts, a nice smokyness as well. Taste is raisins, caramel, malty, quite noticeable booziness that induces a warming finish. Oily mouthfeel. A beautiful Rauchbock! 7-5-8-4-16Early December 2017, again Holzfass at the brewery. This grew on me, and I believe now that this really does not have to hide itself next to Urbock. needs a higher score. 9-5-9-4-18.

Tap at In de Wildeman. Clear light amber with beige head. Lots of smoked meats, caramel, light herbs, ash, more smoke, greasy ham, light apricot. Light sweet and bitter. Under medium bodied with crisp feel. Nice beer, but too smoked for me. Still quite good.

Bottle shared by ciocanelu, many thanks! Clear dark amber color with eggshell head. Aroma is ham, sweet malts, earthy-herbal. Taste is sweet malts, caramel, earthy, herbal. Sweetish finish, medium carbonation. A very nice Smoked, closer to Schlenkerla than their regular Rauchbier - but a bit sweeter and more herbal, it’s quite lieblich.
