Description
De Halve Maan Brewing Company is a family brewery in the heart of Bruges, Belgium. The brewery was restarted and refined by Veronique Maes in 2005. With unique beer recipe on the work, the brewery was renamed as ‘Brugse Zot’. Brugse Zot beer became the only beer that is personally brewed in the town center of Bruges. The Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik beers are two of the brewery’s finest types of beers. Straffe Hendrik beer is filled with bitter ale while the Brugse Zot is rich in fruity flavor along with different types of malts and hoppy aromas.

750ml corked bottle, 2025 vintage. Spicy Belgian yeast aroma with notes of caramel, black pepper, coriander, orange, ginger, bready malt and banana. Pours cloudy golden colored with a finger of white head that has excellent retention and lacing. Starts with black pepper, bready malt, orange and coriander flavors and well as having a light, dry body and crisp mouthfeel. Finishes smooth and refreshing with ginger, banana, spicy yeast and caramel flavors. Excellent Tripel.

33cl bottle (a gift from friends); poured into a Westmalle goblet/chalice at home on 15th October 2025. Slight haze to the golden body, white topping. Yeasty and very 'Belgian' in it's make up. Nice, easy wild/sour beer, give a warm glow to the throat too, liked it.

From a 330ml bottle on 12/10/2025. Pours a slightly opaque very deep golden with a smallish head. The nose features light fermenting apple and Belgian yeast. Tastes of apple, orange, pear, spice and yeast, with a slightly sour, slightly peppery, very dry finish. The palate is slick, the carbonation lively. Decent, but prefer this style a little sweeter and less dry.

A beautiful looking, quite transparent, deep orange, a bit more hazy when pouring the last inch. Medium sized, quite frothy head, the slightest off-white, shows pretty good retention and lacing. Average to good intensity in the aroma: a relatively timid malty presence (marzipan most noticeable), fruity notes taking a bit of edge in the overall panorama, with candied orange most noticeable, plus peach and pear. Quite some spiciness too, mainly peppery and perhaps a bit of coriander. Taste confirms a relatively restrained malty/sweet presence, with taste notes as per aroma, plus an underlying citric feel that reminds of chinotto. A bit of (clean) earthiness in a rather dry per style finish/aftertaste. Quite dense bodied beer with average to above average carbonation; a quite full mouthfeel, somewhere in the middle of full/creamy and lively from carbonation; felt a bit too much "in the middle/undecided" too me, also a bit too burpy (not at all an unpleasant mouthfeel anyways). Overall: a rather original take on the style, quite tasty and well made.

Pours a not too attractive opaque brown with a medium sized off-white, slightly yellowish head; quite good retention, though not much lacing. Pretty good intensity and complexity in the aroma: a deep malty base with well integrated caramel and shortcrust pastry notes, plus hints of honey and brown sugar. Vivid spiciness (anise upfront, clove too), a hint of licorice and red fruits. Taste notes follow the aroma quite closely, with a slight hint of not too clean earthiness. Good intensity as the smell suggested, so-so in terms of taste definition and tidiness (though indeed quite typically belgian at that). Quite some sweetness in both taste and aftertaste, but overall well attenuated and never over the top; feels actually in good balance. Medium or slightly above medium bodied, average carbonation (a bit less carbonated than usual per style i guess), resulting in a relatively easygoing per style mouthfeel, though the beer still has enough of a slow sipper character. Overall: very much recognizable as a belgian dark/dubbel, but also quite peculiar, and definitely nailed in the overall balance.

(Bottle, #03307) Dark brown colour with brief, frothy, beige head. Malty, slightly woody nose with notes of caramel, dark bread, dried fruit, raisins, prunes, liquorice and oak wood. Malty, woody taste with caramel, oak wood, balsamic vinegar, dark bread, sour cherries, dried fruit, prunes, raisins, liquorice and a finish with a mild spicy bitterness and a balanced tannic acidity. Full body, with a certain sweetness. Strong, malty, woody and complex. Very nice.

Hazy yellow colour, small white head. Aroma is wheat, coriander, some mild floral tones with some slight zesty notes. Flavour is quite similar. Typical Belgowit.
