Description
Arthur Van den Bossche founded the brewery in 1897. After his death in 1925, Elenora Callebaut, Arthur's wife and daughter of the Callebaut brewers and chocolatiers family, continued the brewery. In 1935 Willy and Mark Van den Bossche, the 2nd generation, take the helm and further expand the brewery. Ignace son of Mark Van den Bossche, 3rd generation, becomes active in the brewery in 1976. In 2015 Bruno Van den Bossche takes over the brewery from his father. The 4th generation is now taking the lead.

Tight off white head grew on a rich dark oak, finely carbonated body. Malt & tea aroma. Medium bodied, tingly over the tongue with a sticky back. Liquorice, confectionery, malt, jam, berry & sweet tastes. Far too sweet.

33cl bottle as “Peerdevisscher Bruin” from Spar Oostende. F: big, tanned, good retention. C: black, opaque. A: dark roasted malts, cocoa, bit coffee, caramel, bit molasses, dark dried fruits. T: medium malty base, light caramel, bit like red berries, cocoa, dry on the palate, medium carbonation, not so sweet and quite good balanced, enjoyed.

33cl bottle from Spar Oostende. F: huge, egg-white, good retention. C: gold to amber, hazy. A: sweet malty, honey, floral, bit spicy, mellow fruity. T: full malty base, honey, sweet mellow fruity, bit spicy, dough, yeasty, medium carbonation, bit too sweet yet ok, drinkable.

Not an imperial stout, despite the label, it’s a belgian dark strong with some american stout influences. Rather light in color but more belgian yeast driven. Tastes good, but perhaps a bit mistreated. Online beerwulf

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours dark brown with a thin beige head. Aromas of liquorice and toffee. Taste is sweet, caramel and dried fruit. Sweet finish.
