Description

Very hazy gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Palate is airy and semi dry. Plenty of fine carbonation. Dry malts, little dry cream. Spice. Typical Tripel sweetness and spice but also a floral tone that turns quite soapy. It’s also a persistent slow gusher. Infected? Certainly hard to drink.

Bottle. Dark, lively white head. Aroma is a mix of malt and sourness. Taste of roasted malt, licorice and some crispy coffee. Nice soft aftertaste. Mostly stout, hard to taste the tripel. Fails as a black & tan, but succeeds as a decent stout.

33 cl bottle from De Bierkoning @ home. Color is as good as black. Beige/grey head, not too much, but reasonable retention. Aroma’s: sweetish, light roasted, light drop/licorice, slightly herbal. Flavor is moderate sweet, somewhat roasted, light bitter. Medium bodied. Finishes roasted, droppig, light bitter. Nice experiment, but not sure that this blend it adds a lot.

Low alcohol IPA, this was actually my first ’session IPA’, with a very thick, yellowish white, very moussy head captured after gushing, leaving lots of lacing on the edges of the glass; colour is a pinkish orange blonde, completely clouded from the start. Aroma mostly reveals fresh, green hops and dry-hopping, impressions of grapefruit, orange peel, tonic water, hemp, black pepper, dried apricot, some banana, some caramel, rosewater, vanilla, freshly grated ginger, white bread. Taste starts with a vivid, sparkling fruitiness, a basket of oranges, peaches, gooseberries and red apples as it were, with lots of citrussy ’fraîcheur’, inevitably thinnish mouthfeel, light caramelly maltiness, very yeasty; from the middle onwards, a dry, resinous, ’green’ hop bitterness kicks in, very citrussy (Amarillo) and aromatic (Sladek, i.e. Saaz-like), building a surprisingly thirst-quenching, long, complex, dry bitter finish. If the American craft breweries invented this style: kudos. What a great idea to capture the essence of an assertive IPA in a low alcoholic beer... I do suspect, however, that this particular example was not intended to be completely cloudy and gushing, so something must have gone wrong, but I really enjoyed this nevertheless.
