Description
Yorkshire’s Oldest Brewery. Samuel Smith brews a wide range of high quality beers, solely from authentic natural ingredients. The brewery still uses stone Yorkshire squares to ferment all its ales and stouts (except Sovereign and Extra Stout) and the same yeast strain has been used since the 1800s. Whole dried English hop varieties such as Fuggles and Goldings are used to add bitterness and aroma to Samuel Smith’s traditional ales in the antique boiling coppers. Samuel Smith’s uses oak casks for all its naturally conditioned ale. The casks are made and repaired at the Old Brewery by the brewery’s two full time coopers.

Black as night with a big, fluffy head that lasts and laces nicely. Nice faint coffee scent... pretty faint, but very appealing. Nice and easy porter. Slighty coffee and chocolate... mmmm this one's a good one. My only complaint is a tinge of a strange aftertaste. Not bad, but leaves me wondering what exactly that is.

Paid $7.99 for a 4-pack. Nice deep brown with a good sized, soft and creamy looking head. Pretty average smell for a nut brown, but I do happen to enjoy the smell. Nice taste. I had originally given it a 4.5, but it wasn't a mindblowingly original taste. Nice & smooth & creamy... A nice beer. If it was a little cheaper, I'd make it a part of a regular rotation.

Smells of dry, english malt, lightly roasted with a bit of a zing. Color is a very light chestnut brown. Nice, but ultimately too clear for my likings. Decent off-white "walnut" colored head. Flavor begins lightly sweet, caramelly and the trademark Sam Smith yeast flavor. Medium body, dosent seem to thin out as it warms. Not a ton of nuttiness though, just lots of brown sugary malt, with some earthy/roast tinges. I should have let it warm more, but didnt have time. Probably tastes better closer to room temp. will rerate. Rerate Well, I let it warm and it wasn’t much better. Sharp graininess, dry hay with a high amount of iron in it. Some watery coffee. Dead and pasteurized, watery and filtered. I think I need to stop trying to make myself like Sam Smith’s beers and just rate them for what they are. Pasteurized, filtered beer that is well-brewed but obsolete.

Paid $1.79 for a 12 oz single. Inky black, with a small tan head. Sweet alcohol in the nose, along with rich chocolate... reminds me a bit of a cherry cordial. Nice and tasty and smooth! Bittersweet flavor with a tinge of alcohol. Aftertatse is only slightly bitter. Very smooth in the mouth, and might be a good candidate for a session beer.

This is the first Samuel Smith brew that I've been disappointed with up until this point. Appearance: golden amber, nice head. It has a nice color- and is a nice looking beer. Smell: very liquory and dry smelling. Reminds me of the smell of a dry wine or something. Taste: very dry and not really my thing. Reminds me a bit of Old Speckled Hen, which i didn't care for at all. Nice mouthfeel, but still only JUST drinkable.

Pours with a clear copper body and a creamy off-white head. The hops aroma on this one reminds me of tobacco. A complex variety of hops flavors (leafy tobacco, earthiness, wood, wet hay) are balanced by just a hint of malt. Has a weird green tea flavor as well, and the body is somewhat chalky. Interesting but not a favorite.

2003-2004 bottling. Pours clear amber-copper, with an initially dense off-white head that quickly dissipates to a thin film. Nice floral hops aroma with caramel malt backbone. Really nice "chewable" flavor, with caramel malts battling with floral hops over sweet fruity background notes. Thin-bodied like most Samuel Smiths beers, but the rich flavor belies this fact. I prefer this to the majority of overspiced, one-dimensional American holiday offerings.

Pours black, with head a nice tan colour. This stout has scents of pear and apple citrus. With small amounts of roasted malts. First sip started with a nice smooth carbonation and instant molasses with more roasted malts. Sweet sugars, almost a maple sugar were present. The palate consisted of apple citrus with smoke notes and a hint of sherry.

Sam Smith Nut Brown pours a deep brown glass with just enough head to get by. Sweet malty aroma and flavor with a hint of hops in the finish. A step up from Newcastle yet not spectacular either. An easy to drink Brown Ale.

Dark but not quite opaque, some ruby highlights. Good head but in the drinking this came off as thin. The flavors were retrained and left you wanted more. A good beer but I've had others I prefer to this one.
