Description
The Castle Eden Brewery has been a constant part of the North East brewing scene since it was founded by John Nimmo in 1826. Located in County Durham, under the Nimmo family, the brewery grew to annual capacity of 75,000 barrels with an estate of 125 pubs.

It was acquired by Whitbread plc in 1963. During the Whitbread period, the brewery saw continued expansion to an annual capacity of 220,000 barrels that included brewing the renowned Mackeson Stout.

In 1998, the brewery went into private ownership and the tradition of brewing Castle Eden Ales continued. In 2014, the brewery assets were acquired by the present owners and relocated to Seaham.

Since 2016, the brewery has focused on providing contract brewing and packaging whilst continuing to offer a range of Castle Eden Ales on draught.

Serviceable. Malty and sweet, some semi-dark fruits, toasted biscuits and crackers, mild leafy hop. Bready, brown bread, whole grains. Basic but drinkable enough.

Bottle from Northumbrian Gifts. Pours a cloudy amber with moderate sized off white head. Aroma of toffee, doughy bread, sprinkle of raisins. Taste is malty with the doughy bread coming through, toffee, sweet and moderate bitter finish, touch of spice. It's ok

Bottle at me parents. From Lidl or Aldi. Aroma has full on chestnut and malts. Slightly syrupy. Clear brown. Foamy off-white head. Flavour has chestnuts - nutty as it were- but also a syrupy sweetness. Malts. Bitter woody edge. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Soft-fizzy carbonation. Long dry somewhat astringent finish. Hits the spot. Should have added as a Flavored beer rather than a Bitter.

Bottle from Homesense, Manchester. Golden with a small head. Strong tasting with a mild dryness to its texture. Pretty good in style as niche lager, although not overly blessed in the flavour department.
