Description
Since George and Susannah Bateman opened our independent family brewery in 1874, we’ve been using the best possible ingredients and craft brewing methods to make beers that people love.
Four generations later, and we’re still doing things our own way – and have quite a few more beers to our name.

500ml bottle from Morrisons. Pours clear amber, small white head, keeps some retention. Aroma of toasted malts, biscuit, earthy hop. Bitter and dry at the beginning but then semi-sweet, toasty, biscuit and nuts come to the fore. Moderate body and carbonation. Its a good example of an English bitter without the wow factor.

500ml bottle: BBE Sep 2021. The 'Salem Brew' has been dropped for the bottled version and it's 4.6% ABV and just called 'Dark Fruits Porter'. Obtained from my local Morrisons, drank at home on 1st Oct 2020. Black bodied, thin head. As the name suggests there is a dark fruit front to this interesting Porter, black/red berries mainly for me. I really enjoyed this, my first new beer from Batemans for some time and it's a very good addition to their portfolio.

Bottle. Amber pour, white -beige tinged head, good retention throughout. Aroma of roasted malts, citrus, dusty hops, chocolate. Taste is very sweet with almost a chocolate-orange note, toasted malts, spice and a decent bitter finish. Nice rich ale with a slight booze kick but maybe a little too sweet in terms of balance (and this is coming from a cider drinker).

Deep brown with a ruby tinge, and a frothy tan head. Has a dark berry fruit aroma, with some caramel sweetness also apparent, and this continues into the taste on top of a sweet roasted malt backbone, with a hint of nuts also present, and a very smooth mouthfeel. Finishes with a touch of dry bitterness which continues into the aftertaste.

Deep amber with a small, frothy off-white head, and a sweet, malty aroma. The sweet malt carries through into the taste, along with some dark berry fruit, and there’s a hint of pepper spice in the finish. Very smooth mouthfeel, without any alcohol burn you might anticipate from its ABV
