Bierbrouwerij Vermeersen

Microbrewery in Hulst, Zeeland, Netherlands 🇳🇱

Established in 1991

31965, Absdaalseweg 2, Hulst, 4561 GG, Netherlands
Description
The history of the brewery begins in 1821, when Messrs Wauters, Faseert and Neyt founded the Halve Maan brewery in Hulst. The Hulsterse Brouwers persist in brewing top-fermented beer. Even when all other Dutch breweries brew Pilsener, traditional beer still flows from the kettles in Hulst. In 1968, the brewery in the city center of Hulst was closed and the cellar rights were sold to Paul Vermeersen, who before then was a distributor of Hulster beer.

In 1989, a new brewery was put into use on the Absdaalseweg. From 2010, the old brewery installation was thoroughly modernized. In 2016, the name “Beer Brewery Vermeersen” was adopted. The brewery is currently focusing on brewing beautifully balanced beers from, as far as possible, local ingredients for the Zeeland Market.

Bottle. Vermeersen Grof Geschut. Color: Copper, beige head. Aroma: Caramel, malt, sugar. Taste: Malt, caramel, notes of white sugar, light hints of vanilla and booze. Medium body, below average carbonation. Moderate to medium sweet, moderate bitterness. Ok, easy drinkable but at the same time lacking body and flavour in my opinion.

330ml swing-top bottle @ Slot Oostende, Goes. Pours unclear amber, off-white head. Aroma is herbal, though not especially rooibos, some light caramel malts. Taste is smooth with light caramelised malts, some interesting sorachi shades, some nuts, very distant rooibos tea, though not too prominent. Light body. Ok but all necessary elements seem a bit lacklustre.

Brewery Vermeersen, formerly known as De Halve Maan, is an old family brewery in Hulst, just north of the Belgium-Holland border and very close to my home region; they have consistently produced ales of decent quality but apparently their range also contains this ‘pils’, very likely the source of a number of aliases as well. At Brasserie Oud Hulst, where it was sold simply as "Vermeersen Pils". Snow white, densely creamy, thickly lacing, stable head over a pale, pure golden straw blonde beer, cristal clear with lively visible fizz. Aroma of cream corn, baking soda, plaster, damp kitchen towel, wet grass. Neutral and very straightforward in the mouth, very rounded-cereally with somehow a kind of creaminess to it, almost buttered popcorn-like; minerally and vaguely plasticky accents and a very late, weak grassy hop bitterish touch in the finish, but it is that popcorn-ish softness that persists. Very bland pale lager, but the creaminess made it somewhat distinctive; I wonder why a small brewery ventures into this territory, though, and if they want to do that anyway, why not go all the way and make a hoppy, crisp Czech or German style Pilsener instead of trying to imitate the already dreary quality of Holland’s macro lagers?

Golden colour with light haze. Aroma and flavour are quite strong for a Pilsener. Decent body. Lasting bitterness.
