Established in 1830
The origin of the brewery and distillery Gebr. Sünner was located in Cologne-Deutz. Today it is the oldest Kölsch brewery in the world and has been owned by the Sünner family since 1830. The origins go back to a small house brewery called "Zum Schiffgen" with a distillery and taproom. In 1846 the brewery moved to the current premises in Cologne-Kalk. With Astrid Schmitz-DuMont, the sixth generation of the Sünner family has taken over the management of the brewery and continues the tradition of the family-owned brewery and distillery.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Clear golden body with a medium white head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of stainless steel and hay. Flavour of grain, boiled vegetables and a metallic finish. Thin body with a watery, sightly oily texture. Soft fizz. Not one I’d seek out again.

Keg at the Pure Bar & Kitchen, Birmingham city centre. Mid to dark gold, hazy, well-carbonated. Sulphur, apple skin, banana in the aroma. Taste is sweet, almost a hint of saccharin, with a bit sulphur hit at the end. Finish has more bitterness than the initial taste. I’m not all that keen.

Location: Draft at Au Cheval, 6/10/14
Aroma: The nose of this beer has some bready malts and some citrus hops
Appearance: It pours a clear yellow-gold color with a thin, fizzy head and some average lace
Flavor: The taste is much the same, light bready, malty, and some decent hop notes
Palate: The body is light and fizzy, it has an okay drinkability and mouthfeel
Overall Impression: I thought this was a decent, but not great example of the style. Light and fizzy, with a solid flavor.

50cl green bottle pours with a clear gold body that supports a white head. The aroma offers up corn and lime and a light floral hop note. The taste starts with a crisp hop bitterness coming from lemon to lime citrus and floral hops. As the hop bitterness fades toward the finish I’m left with a mild candied floral soapiness that distracts from the experience.
