Description
Shock Top is a traditional Belgian-Style wheat ale. It was originally created in 2006 as a seasonal brew under the name Spring Heat Spiced Wheat. After collecting gold in ’06 and bronze in ’07 in the Belgian White category at the North American Beer Awards, we decided to brew year-round and switch the name to Shock Top. We couldn’t be happier with our decision. And the best decision you can make is to try some Shock Top for yourself.

draft - Pours slightly hazy yellow with a htin head. The light aroma is citrus and malt. The flavor has citrus and some mild spice notes. It’s a little thin bodied and has a very carbonated mouthfeel. It’s not bad, really, but even a Blue Moon is better.

Bottle. Wow, suprisingly good when you consider the source. While I’d prefer Blue Moon, AB certainly has found something they’re good at (if only they’d put more effort in their other beers). Nothing overly special for a beer drinker, but it is very drinkable and pretty smooth with no nasty aftertaste like you might get from Bud or Busch.

Pour is a yellow with a huge white head Aroma is deffinatly coriander with some spice. Flavor is much weaker than the aroma. Some tart fruit but then its just very watery and bland. NIce try AB.

Tap. Light orange-lemon wheat malt aroma. Hazy orange-yellow color with small head. Orange-apricot and wheat malt flavor with the slightest hint of mustiness. Have to say this is not a bad brew - much better than most of their products and actually not a bad attempt at a witbier - beats a lot of other smaller American breweries’ attempts at the style.

A Belgian Wit bier???? Are you kidding me? The day Budweiser brews a true Belgian beer is the day I brew a filtered budweiser clone.
Not to say this was a bad beer, as it was fairly drinkable, if a bit too sweet and punchy on the spicing. Fairly thick body though, with more residual sugar than I’ve seen in any bud product to-date (not counting the Celebration or Brewmasters Reserve) with a much improved mouthfeel. Sweet candy-like sugars, tons of coriander and candied-orange flavors, with vanilla-honey sweetness underlying the spice. Not much, if any complexity, and an odd acidity and slight breadiness on the finish. No alcohol noted and certainly no Belgian witbier esters or phenols. A bit crude for a spiced beer, as the sugars got too sticky by the end of the glass. Amber-orange colored body is topped by an off-white/beige head that shows moderate retention and little/no lacing. Tastes like a spiced amber ale to me, with way too much caramel-vanilla for what you would expect in a lighter wheat beer.
Rating is to-style, since budweiser claims this is a belgian wheat. Would be significantly higher if it was not to-style.

Pours a very cloudy yellow-gold, with a three finger meringue of a head. Looks like a darkish wit. Aroma has plenty of coriander, then lemon rind, then suddenly lots of orange rind. Flavor starts off lightly malty with a big minty wheaty character, followed by a touch of phenol and a very mild indistinct fruitiness. It then finishes dry with a lingering hint of fruit and a tingle of coriander spice on the cheeks. Pretty acceptable.

Oh yes, the packaging is good. Micro brew style label and you only ID it as AB if you look close. 12 oz brown bottle with a twist off cap. Remove the cap for a sour citrus aroma mixed with yeasty wheat. The pour is very nice, even with a layer of yeast down in the bottom. Roll the last bit gently around and you can utilize it. Very pretty light beige yellow appearance. Nice streams of carbonation continue from within. The taste is absolutely wheatlike, but may be more like a good hefe rather than a wit. It is clean and fresh without any sign of offensive bitterness at all. The carbonation seems just right for this style, tingling as it rolls down the back of your throat. I think this is on par with the flavors of Hogaarden, Pax and Wittekirk, just not quite as refined. There is an added spice there but it is not overwhelming. Compared to HP&W, Hogaarden and Wittekirke do the honors without the additional flavors. The finish is friendly and well behaved, a perfect gentleman when it comes to manners. I add this to my list of beers I’d buy again, gimmie another.
