Description
Shock Top is a traditional Belgian-Style wheat ale. It was originally created in 2006 as a seasonal brew under the name Spring Heat Spiced Wheat. After collecting gold in ’06 and bronze in ’07 in the Belgian White category at the North American Beer Awards, we decided to brew year-round and switch the name to Shock Top. We couldn’t be happier with our decision. And the best decision you can make is to try some Shock Top for yourself.

Bottle: Fuzzy pale golden with a moderate white head. Aroma is citrus candy with some pale lager maltiness. Sort of musty. Flavor is fruity with citrus and orange. Some maltiness and grassey notes. Barley a hint of spice. Rather bland.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy light golden color with a large white head. The aroma was musty and yeasty with light hints of lemon and spice. The flavor was tangy citrus with a hint of cardboard and a trace of mustiness. The finish was moderately long tangy lemon.

Sample at Dave & Jacquie’s in Defiance, MO. A-B continues their non-threatening foray into craft beer. Pours a lightly hazy yellow-gold color with a thin white head that diminishes quickly. Stringy lacing on the glass. Light spice and citrus in the nose. Light-bodied and effervescent with mild yeast, spice and citrus flavors. The finish is clean and fruity with a mild spice lingering. Nothing offensive or interesting going on here.

Brown bottle from Hi-Time. Aroma of wheat. I’d be imagining fruit or spice. Hazy light gold color with a decent white head that tries to lace. Near medium body with creamy carbonation. The flavor is wheat, with a little of that standard AB corniness. There is the barest trace of orange peel and perhaps clove. A little lemon comes along. It’s not much of a wit, and lacks the banane for a hefe. However, it is ever so much more drinkable than Bud. After some time a little more fruit and spice builds in the mouth. I’d say it’s definitely drinkable, but applying Marcus’ rule I’ll find a better beer.

12 oz. bottle. Anyone surprised to find that this is about as authentically belgian as an Eggo waffle? I didn’t think so. Pours the same pale drabness as a Bud, with a slightly saving grace of some haze. Somewhat orangey smell, uh-huh. Taste comes in like an overly fizzy Radler beer, except with Tang in place of lemon. Suggestion of sourness, as it A-B was afraid to damage sales by making anything tart. Over carbonation is what really makes this unpalateable, it gets in the way of any attempt to make the flavors get along. Not even in Blue Moon territory.

Lemon aroma. Color is cloudy light gold. The head was thin but long lasting. It tasted very grainy with lemon and slight hop flavor on the edges, not very balanced. It had a very funny onion and olive aftertaste. Despite the bizarre finish, it was quite delicious and endlessly drinkable. I had completely forgotten I rated this a year ago. My new rating is identical however. The beer really is pretty good.

Very hazy golden coloured body with a light orange colour and a very thin frothy white head. Aroma of pungent spice, curacao, wheat, yeast, oranges, lemons and coriander seed - a very nice smell and not macro smelling at all. Medium-bodied; Spicey flavour, almost too much so with a good curacao and coriander seed taste along with a potent wheatyness as well. Aftertaste shows a bunch more spicey characters, along with some lemon and sweet kicks as well. Overall, a decent and fairly good beer - odd for me to say for an AB product. I’d try this again, and it wasn’t as nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 29-April-2007.

Surprisingly pleasant. I know who makes it, and I hear they are trying to compete with Blue Moon. BM is better. Citrus and wheat in the aroma. cloudy yellow, and a sweet flavor that includes more wheat and light spices with a touch of sour citrus. Perhaps AB’s best product.
