Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours a dark copper with a small off-white head and good lacing. Has a pleasant aroma featuring berry fruits. In the mouth berry fruits and grains (particularly rye) are to the fore initially, with an undercurrent of malts. Later on though a harsh metallic bitterness comes through, plus a hint of raspberries. Finish is fruity and bitter. This is OK, but it’s a bit strange.

Clear pale amber with a frothy white head and a honey sweet aroma. There's a sharp kick of hops and alcohol up front before it mellows out into a fruity, light malt bitter

Handpull cask at the Kings Head, Leicester. Mid-gold with a thin, even off-white head. Lovely little aroma resplendent with fresh peaches. Taste is sweet, again with a lot of peach character, followed by an intense if short-lived hop bitterness. Watery body, soft carbonation. One of the better Derby beers I've had.

Cask at Royal Standard / Tap, Derby. Pours a chrome yellow with a small white head and good lacing. Not much of an aroma – just vague generic citrus. In the mouth it is sweet and zesty with citrus and grapefruit to the fore. Berry fruits and a slight hoppiness come through later. Finish is dry and fruity. Reasonable, but not my sort of beer.

Cask at Derby Tap. Pours a solid dark brown with minimal cream head. Roast malts and vanilla in the nose. Starts off sweet and fruity in the mouth, but liquorice then comes through and dominates. Some hints of chocolate, cocoa and malts as well. Finish is mainly liquorice. Quite nice.
