In 1981, Peter Mauldon, the great grandson of Anna Maria decided to re-establish the family tradition and start a brewery in Sudbury once again. Watney where he progressed to Head Brewer at the company’s large Mortlake Brewery.

Hand pulled half pint in my local Spoons on 16th December 2025. Saw this on the bar and ignored it, thought I'd rated it years ago, seems I hadn't, on checking when back at my table (with a pint of something else). So I go back and order this. It poured a clean and clear golden colour with a white crust on top. Nice blend and slightly fruity in nature, glad I checked, maybe I've never had it before?

Cask at London & North Western, Birmingham (at 4.3%). Pours almost black with medium sized foamy tan head and good lacing. There’s floral hops and blackberries in the aroma. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy but with a little underlying bitterness. Flavour has dark fruits, roasted malts with hints of hops, chocolate and coffee coming later. This is nice – pleasantly drinkable.

Lovely looking deep dark brown, near black with a creamy tan head and a mellow aroma of dark fruits and roasted malt. Velvety smooth and creamy, slightly tart berry fruit, coffee and sweet roasted malt nicely balanced, finishes dry and a little bitter.

Handpull cask at the Salmon, Leicester. Light gold but not quite straw, clear with a uneven white head. A light lemony scent, a little soapy, some Hay and grass character. Bittersweet with clean citrus hop. Bitterness fills the mouth in the finish. A vegetal touch but otherwise lovely. Light body with soft carbonation. A simple and well-executed British golden.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours golden straw with minimal almost white head and good lacing. The aroma is fresh citrus and floral hops. In the mouth it is initially sweet and creamy but from the start there is a little underlying bitterness and this gradually becomes prominent. Flavours is pretty much standard malts, floral hops and citrus with some tangerine and hints of mango coming through later. This is decent – nice and refreshing, though not distinctive.
