330mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany brown with a small beige head. Nose is full of strong whiskey barrels upfront, along with spicy Belgian yeast, gentle esters, and subtle dark dried fruits. Flavour has plenty of spicy Belgian yeast expression and boozy whiskey barrels in cohesion upfront, with subtle esters and a touch of dark dried fruits. The whiskey barrels are a bit harsh and the yeast expression is not the most complex. Finishes burnt, bitter, boozy, and somewhat estery. But it's not bad.

330mL bottle, pours a deep dark brown with a huge beige head. Aroma brings out lots of Belgian yeast expression, candi sugar, gentle whiskey, and toasted chestnuts. Flavour is lightly sweet, with complex Belgian yeast expression, dark dried fruits, gentle whiskey, candi sugar, and toasted nuts. Carb is high but fitting. Excellent.

330 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with moderate head. Aromas of dark fruit, berries, orange peel, potpourri and toasted malts. Flavors of same withe emphasis on slighty sour fruit and spice. Nice

330 ml bottle. Pours a hazy dark brown with moderate head. Aromas of dark berries, dark caramel, doughy malts and a bit of perfume. Flavors follow same with a bit of candi sugar and spice; but the perfume notes remain and are distracting

The amber beer (or should I say ‘spéciale belge’ in Flemish context) by this gypsy brewer using rather childishly sexist labels; bottle from De Picker in Zele. Frothy, egg-white, membrane-lacing, rocky head on an initially near clear, pure coppery amber beer, turning misty and a bit more brown-coppery with sediment. Aroma of old tea bags, dry bread crust, old dried orange peel, rusty iron (oxidation!), clove, hard caramel, dried rosehip, dried apricot, straw, dry clay. Dryish onset, some dried apricot and dried apple peel, hint of old orange peel too, softishly carbonated (certainly for style) with smooth, slick body; hard and dry-caramelly and beech-nutty malts, bread crust and toast notes, a bit oxidized already and slightly metallic, with some phenolic effects (clove, even very vague rubber). Ends with a long, drying, floral and herbal hop bitterness and ‘dead yeast powderiness’. Earthy, dimly lit Belgian amber, clearly past its prime already too, but a simple oldskool quencher much like the older examples of Belgian amber ale (with this one, in its yeasty and stronger character, actually bearing more resemblance with typical Walloon ambrée than with spéciale belge). I should probably revisit this one when it is still young and fresh. Maybe at some or other beer festival, who knows…

My 33 cl bottle was acquired from the pleasant people at Belgian Happiness a good time ago. I’ve had no quads recently so now is the right time even though it is 40 deg C outside. I pulled down my New Belgium globe glass to handle this tasting and have the bottle opened for the pour. A rich, dark brown body finished by a large creamy head of yellowish tan foam. The scent is ripe fruit, toasted grain and yeast. And the sampling starts well. Leather, figs, plenty of malt, black plums, an alcohol edginess, bread and raisins. A nice balance of sweet and bitter, but actually little of either. A fairly classic version of the style, this always pleases me. But then, it is my favorite style.

Bottle from Beers@Moviefun. Hazy dark brown, small, tan head. Aroma of raisin, candied plum, dried orange peel, ripe pear, caramel, liquorice, sweet malt whisky. Taste has sweet pear, raisin & candied plum in a caramelly, biscuity malt body with spicy liquorice & cookie spices notes. Herbal hoppy finish offering dried fruits, lingering brown sugar effect and warming sweet whisky alcohol (rather than bourbon). Medium body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation. Not very refined but I have a weakness for Quads (and whisky) so hence my relatively high mark for taste. And indeed, the labels might be getting out of hand...
