Description
Note to Brewver members:-

The majority of beers have historically been released as 'Canterbury - XYZ' so should appear in the beer listings without the brewery name.

There is also a range of beers, usually only available at the brewpub itself and smaller batch, released as 'Foundry - XYZ'. These beers therefore appear with the Foundry name first in the beer listings.

Canterbury Brewers is a traditional microbrewery and the only one based within the city walls of Canterbury. We produce a range of modern and fresh cask-conditioned ales using only the finest quality floor-malted barley, hops and yeast available. With our distinctive recipes and our beautiful new brewery situated on Whitehorse Lane, we aim to add something different to the ever-growing and vibrant micro-brew scene in Kent. The Foundry Brewery, which opened in June 2011, is in sight of Canterbury Cathedral and just off the high street, and includes a restaurant, bar and an eight-barrel brewery. Brewery tours and tastings run regularly, and our restaurant can be booked for special events and functions - just get in touch!

Day 2 of the post Xmas Bamberg Jolly, Cafe Abseits Tasting bottle thanks to grumpy Ian, 25/01/14. Hazed orange amber with a thin off white covering. Nose is light plastic, bitter oragen, earthy, bread dough. Taste comprises bread dough, malts, faint hoppy backnotes, grass, citric twang. Medium bodied, fine carbonation. Decent for style.

Bottle from The Foundry and drunk at home. Amber orange colour with slight haze from pouring in a bit of the yeast. Lasting thin beige head. Not a lot of carbonation, in fact a bit flat in the mouth. I mean it’s quite syrupy and strong in the mouth. Yes some grapefruit hop, but not hugely bitter on the finish. For a beer that costs around £8 I think I expected a bit more. Made with green hops so you do get that gun metal flavour on the finish. Some toffee caramel malts, some pepper hop on the finish. A bit like the Fullers Vintage Ale I had last night, but not quite as good. It grew on me as I drank it, or was that the alcohol? Yes decent malt base and decent hops. I grew to like it.

Nose is very strong, leather, petrol, oak, brown sugar. It’s intense, but not to my taste. Taste is biscuit, toffee, some smoke, leather, slight peat and sugars from the whiskey barrel. Mouthfeel is unpleasantly slick. This never really got going and I didn’t particularly enjoy, the sweetness of the whiskey was a little off putting.

6.6% Bag in a box at The Foundry Canterbury. Clear gold no head. Bready apple aroma. Slightly acidic in mouth. Some sweetness. Not much tannin but quite acidicon finish. Dryish on finish but still plenty of apple fruit.

Bottle from Mouton Rouge, Canterbury. Hazy amber thin white head. Belgian yeast and green hop aroma. Excellent use of Belgian yeast and then the hops are just magnificent on the finish. May need a little more backbone, but that hoppy bitter slightly gun metal finish is superb. Yeast carries on throughout. Just lovely. Could drink this all night.

4.4% Cask handpull at The Foundry Canterbury. Clear gold lasting off white head. Wow different from the regular beer. Only a faint ester aroma. Aroma is far more hoppy. Smooth in mouth with lots of green hop oil metal on the finish but in a good way. Like gun oil. Interesting. Belgian yeast kicks in towards the finish. Aggressive.

7.4% Aged on American oak chips. Pale gold slight haze thin collar of white bubbles. Well the oak and vanilla come through but don’t dominate the apples. Aroma takes me back to Napa Valley. Apple character is there but I would want it to be a bit more characterful to battle the oak. Certainly interesting though. Oh and it’s too sweet
