History of the Brewery

East Anglia is home to some of the best brewers in the whole of Europe.

They practice their art steeped in age-old tradition and surrounded on all sides by endless fields of the world’s best malting barley. These days brewers are keeping abreast of the times and harnessing modern technology to help produce deeply satisfying beers that are taking beer festivals across the country by storm. East Anglia has always been famous for it beers and smaller breweries thoroughly enjoy the challenge of competing against the big players in the region.

One of the leaders in the field is the Wolf Brewery, whose brewers are driven by a passion to make distinctive East Anglia beers known to a wider audience. Its founder, Wolfe Witham, was the driving force behind the hugely popular Reindeer brewpub in Norwich during its heyday in the 1980’s.

The Wolf Brewery opened in 1995 on the old Gaymers Cider site in Attleborough but after 10 years of steady growth the business outgrew the premises. In 2006, a major investment was made in a new brewplant at a new premises, a couple of miles away in the village of Besthorpe.

More recently, Wolf has installed a state of the art bottling plant so that ale aficionados further afield can enjoy more of the prize winning ales.

As always quality comes first and a genuine quality product, crafted with care and packed with goodness, is something we are very proud to offer. The Wolf brewery is also part of the East Anglian Brewers Co-operative. This organisation is, among other things, taking steps to work with local farmers aiming for ‘full traceability’ so that eventually the beer can be traced right through from the grain to the glass.

Our ingredients are local, our recipes and our methods are local - and we always want to keep it this way. We believe that East Anglia is the home of quality brewing!

Cask at the Southampton Arms, London on 28th Sept 2010. Dark ruby with white ring-and-film head. Plenty of roast malt and bitterness after a fruity start. An increasingly bitter finish, tinged with berry fruit. Very satisfying, zingy mouthfeel. More-ish.

Cask at the Harp, London. Pours clear amber with a foamy, white head. Fruit and malt aroma. Sweet flavor with pineapple, licorice, light spices, dark malts and lightly toasted bread. Very little bitterness. Finishes sweet with some fruity malts and earthy hops.

Cask at Argyll Arms. Pours clear yellow with a soft, white head. Biscuit aroma with some sour fruits - I fear the beer may be off. Flavor is slightly better with some floral hops and sweet, bready malts. Light to medium in body with soft carbonation. Finishes bitter with some grass and sour citrus. I’m guessing this should have been different.

Cask (handpump) @ NWAF 10, National Winter Ales Festival, The Venue, Sheridan Suite, Manchester, England.Clear medium dark amber color with a average, frothy - fizzy, fair lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, hay, roasted, caramel, keller, light hoppy. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. Bottle from Beers of Europe, abv 4.7%. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of roasted malts and chocolate, slightly creamy and sweet. Flavour is roasted malts, dark chocolate, hint of ash and smoke. Medium bodied. Dry finish. Very decent stout.

Cask. Clear orangey brown with a tiny, rough off-white head. Nutty nose. Light-bodied, roasted malt, nuts and a little ashes. Fairly hoppy finish. 220110

This cask conditioned ale was quite different from all the other five I had during a happy drinking session at the Marked Porter. Pale golden body with no head. Smell of tart fruits and some kind of spices. Tart citric fruits in flavour with malts behind. Dry bitter endnotes. Thin and a bit diluted. Refreshing but far from great. Just a half pint (London, 16.07.2010).

cask ... really pale yellow ... thin white head ... ... toffee sweet fruits ... light lemon ... juicy ... unusual but quite drinkable ... nice

Tap at the Evening Star, Brighton on 31 May 2010. Pale gold, slightly hazy with white decaying head. Grassy hop, floral/citric fruit and a dry finish on a smooth mouthfeel.
