Bottle, 2010 vintage. Not much head going on here, just some beige bubbles around the rim. Clear, dark golden to copper colored body. Sugary, malty nose with dried fruits, something port-like and alcoholic, a touch of hops and some caramel. A bit thin on the palate, warming and sort of sugary. Caramel, some roasted malts, dried fruits, overripe apples, alcohol and bitterness in the flavor. Well, quite decent, but the flavor isn’t as good as expected when smelling it. Maybe a bit rough on the edges too. 111001

Bottle. Unclear dark amber/orange with tiny diminishing tan head. Aroma is malt, fruit, caramel, toffee and alcohol. Flavour is malt, caramel, dried fruits, sweet, toffee, wood and notes of alcohol.

Cask @ Cockney Pub, Aarhus. Clear dark reddish brown with an off-white head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee and soy sauce? Flavor is medium sweet and light bitter. Dry and light bitter finish. 160911

there is a reason michael jackson referred to this one as the ultimate beer before bed, there is definitely something in this beer that is relaxing. a little sickly sweet for my taste, although i do appreciate that that is how its done in great britain.

250ml bottle, vintage 2010, bought at the Real Ale in a Bottle Bar, GBBF’11 and carried back home. Unclear, dark orange coloured body. A few bubbles to the rim of the glass. Dried fruits and bready malts to the nose, with mild vapour of alcohol. Dried fruity taste added by plums and bread-like malts. Noticeable sweet alcohol on the swallow. Medium bodied. OK, but I had expected more of this one (Tromsø, 20.08.2011).

Hur gammal ska en Thomas Hardy vara för att bli optimal? Efter att ha provat en 08’, 05’, 94’, 89’ och en 79’ tillsammans kan jag konstatera att redan 05’ utvecklats väldigt mycket jämfört med 08’-an som var spritig och tunnare i smaken. 94’-an hade tappat något in styrka och fått en mer vinös ton. Intryck som förstärkes av 89-an. Den var platt och sur. Men 79-an var fantastisk, rundare och komplexare än 05-an men inte så långt därifrån. Svårt att dra generella slutsatser. Några kan ha lagrats fel. Glappet mellan 05’ och 94’ var i största laget. Men detta är det ultimata dessertölet. Efter några år i källaren står det sig perfekt till en stark ost eller mörk choklad. Söt, javisst men med smaker och styrka som matchar det.

bottle from a wine shop in Sidmouth. Pours with an oily consistenca, no head. Intensive aroma reminding me of sherry. Full-bodied, again sherry, plus plums, wood/cask and apricots. Is this perhaps the successor of Thomas Hardy Ale?
