On tap. Pours a very dark brown with moderate lightish tan head. Aromas of roasted malt/barley. Flavors of watery coffee, cardboard, nuts and dusty roasted malts. Light bitter finish. A classic surpassed by craft.

Dark brownish colour with a creamy light beige head. Coffee and light roasted malt aroma. Feels like you are drinking a big coffee :-) Also a bit bready and some sweet chocolate flavour.

Classic Irish dry stout tasted from tap. Tanned, creamy, very dense, milky head and near black colour. Looks the same as Guinness Draught and has the same thick creamy mouthfeel, but there is less iron in the aroma and more malty and fruity sweetness in the mouth, more apple- and chocolate-like; finish equally roasted bitter. On the same par as Guinness Draught, but I’d prefer Beamish.

The most easily available Irish red, with 19th-century roots but more a marketing concept than anything else (some authors even wonder if ’Irish red’ deserves full recognition as a traditional beer style at all). Snow white head, copperish colour, malty aroma of caramel and toasted bread, bit one-dimensional, caramelly taste with bitter finish and thin body. Industrial, simple and lager rather than ale, this is not good publicity for this style, but may well be the only example most - even experienced - beer drinkers will ever be confronted with, alas...

Irish ’red’ tasted from draught in Venice. Amber colour, loose off-white head, caramelly smell in an artificial way, nutty malts, peppery hops; bit thin taste, one-dimensional, starting with caramel sweetness, nutty with leafy bitterness in the end. Drinkable but boring, like Murphy’s Irish Red, from which it doesn’t differ that much.

Leicht kaffeeartiger Antrunk, dünn, wenig malzig. Das Bier nimmt an Intensität noch ab, etwas getreidig, nun eher unpassend. Zu dünn im gut zu sein, auch wenn das Ende harmonischer ist. 14/7/9/9/7/9

Keg at Pleasance Courtyard. Black body with a lasting tan head. Excellent lacing. Aroma of creamy chocolate, earth and ash. Flavour of biscuit and burnt toast. Dry finish. Thick mouthfeel with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. Not bad, but not particularly memorable.

On keg. Appearance - opaque black with a lovely fawn head. Nose - a very elusive note of dark chocolate biscuits. Taste - mainly malt not much chocolate. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - decent for a mass distribution beer.
