Description
All Dikke Jan beers are brewed by ourselves at the DECA brewery in Vleteren (Woesten). This brewery has a long historical background. The unique thing about this very special artisanal brewery is that it is still brewed in the old maisch tub. She is no less than one hundred years old! Fermentation also still takes place in open copper and stainless steel vats. Top beers are brewed here in the old fashioned way.

Golden colour with thin head. Full bodied and malty. Sweet from the malts but not much of the typical Tripel banana and spice.

As Dikke Jan Winterbier Oak Aged. Gusher. Cloudy brown colour with thin head. Aroma is woody. Flavour has initial woody dry notes and a little red wine astringency. Flavour is otherwise quite flat though. Some oxidisation.

Bottle from Carrefour. Pours hazy ochre with a huge, lasting, foamy, off-white head; decent lacing. Aroma of yeast, banana, pineapple, pear, spices, old bread, vague glue/solvent. Taste has sweet pineapple, banana, bready & yeasty feel with a spicy accent, something weirdly plastic-like too. Dry, grassy hoppy finish, yeasty, dash of jenever-like alcohol. Medium body, creamy texture, fizzy carbonation. Cliché with some flaws, too bad.

Bottle from a Carrefour. Pours hazy dark brown with a slowly thinning, foamy, tan head. Aroma of raisin, fig, caramelised popcorn, salted peanut, pear, candi sugar, brioche, molasses. Taste is medium malty sweet, lots of dark fruits (fig, raisin), some pear, caramelly & nutty edges, dough-like; light herbal bitter middle with toast, green tea, metallic note too. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, lingering dough, caramel, dark fruits, bit bittering metallic. Medium body, slick-oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Could have been better...

Thanks for sharing tderoeck! Sampled draft @ Bierfestival Brugge 2019. Red candy appearance. Nose is massively heavy yoghurt, butter with gelatine candy, sweet cherry. Taste is rotting mouldy sweet yoghurt, butter, medicinal sweet gelatine cherry,… Madly body, yoghurt, butter, yikes, unpleasant. Real fruit maybe but nasty as well.
