Cask, as Baker’s Dozen, 3.9 % abv., half. Filmy layer at the top of a golden-brown coloured body. Malt-fruity nose. Fruity caramel in flavour with bitter endnotes. Alright with the homemade food at New Oxford in Salford (Greater Manchester, 22.01.2013).

Brown 500ml bottle: best before May 2013. Poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 3rd Nov 2012 during a random tasting session. Lovely amber body, clear and bright: on top a huge snow white foaming head. The nose and taste were malts first and foremost with hop notes and bitterness arriving later in the flavours. The malts are bread/biscuity in nature the hops fruity as well as bittering. Nice balance and blend of flavours: could easily had another, and another, and another.

25th April 2012: Hand pulled pint in ‘The White Lion’ a well respected ‘Real Ale’ outlet in Wellington, Shropshire. I’ve had this at the brew-pub in Bishops Castle a few times but never rated/reviewed it before, just like the pint before this one (Big Nev’s). Golden bodied brew with a thin, weak looking white head on top. Fruity aroma with a slight citrus bite to it: add some malted biscuits too. The taste was sweeter than the smells indicated: more malt flavours, caramel and toffee coming to the fore and overcoming the hop content somewhat. The hops re-asserting themselves towards the end of each gulp; where a citrus/more bitter feel took over. Easy drinking beer; like all the brews from The Six Bells.

25th April 2012: Hand pulled pint in ‘The White Lion’ a well respected ‘Real Ale’ outlet in Wellington, Shropshire. I’ve had this at the brew-pub in Bishops Castle a few times but never rated/reviewed it before. Slight haze to this yellow/golden brew (every time) and always a thin off-white head on top. No huge nose here: mild mix of both spicy and citrusy hops, wood and malted biscuits. The taste is also a mixed bag: malts with semi-bittering hops as the mouth dries. Nutty, woody and pleasant throughout (which is why I’ve had it so often). Medium body strength and depth, a nice blend and well worth finding.

First had this on a CAMRA bus trip on 24th March 2012 but this report is from a pint and a half (cask) poured in The Cock Hotel, Wellington on 31st March 2012. Light golden coloured body with a good looking white head. The nose was weak, some mild citrusy hop hints but otherwise nothing. The taste leaned towards hops although the malts were never far from the surface either. A pleasant flavour but lacking in umph!

Cask-coniditoned at the Annexe, Bristol 24/02/2012. Copper coloured with a decent, off-white head. Nutty, malt aroma with some sweet hedgerow fruit. Flavours of earthy malts with a touch of orange and lingering, bitter finish. Fine.
