Description
Joseph Holt is a unique brewery: it embodies both traditional values and exceptional brewing. For more than 160 years the company has not only created and developed award winning beer, but also served the community of which it forms a part of. It has built sustainable jobs and worked with charities to deliver substantial benefits to people living in the brewery’s area of operations and beyond.
Established in 1849, Joseph Holt Ltd has been managed by its founding family for five generations. Throughout that time the company has been driven by traditions of professionalism, honesty and innovation. So the business, although rooted in the traditional values of a family firm with a reputation built on traditional draft and bottled beer, has always looked to evolve. The most recent developments in that evolution are the Crystal and Diamond range of lagers and the Golden Ale Two Hoots. These products join the collection of award winning lagers and excellent Smooth and Black keg beer.
The brewery has an established pub estate that is carefully managed to ensure that it is focused on growth.

Pint on tap at Crown & Anchor, Manchester. Slight malt nose, clear still red/brown ale with solid white head. Bitter taste, creamy consistency. Aftertaste is metallic hops and a little toasted malt. Nice, but served too cold for the style.

Half pint at Norfolk Arms, Glossop. I thought I’d give this its tenth review. No aroma. Pale amber with tiny head, medium carbonation. Chalky sweet mouthfeel followed by short vegetal hop finish. Not much happening, good thirst quencher.

Pint on tap at Norfolk Arms, Glossop. Slight honey nose. Clear still golden beer with small solid white head. Watery mouthfeel, sour taste. Finish is more citric sourness. Maybe some honey right at the very end. Maybe......

50cl bottle from Morrisons, Bracknell. A attractive deep reddish chestnut colour with a thick creamy beige head; the aroma has some raisins and demerara sugar, and also some damp earth; the mouthfeel is creamy with a complex blend of flavours - some bittersweet chocolate, some purple fruit, coffee and raw cane sugar, all balanced by a pleasant bitterness; and rounded off by a dry, warming, nutty finish. Rather good.
