650mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks a lot, Dany), pours an amber-tinged black with a huge foamy beige head. Aroma is quite berry-like, with loads of fruitiness, not much sign of the whiskey barrels, just a bit of wood. Flavour is a bit tart, with loads of berries, some dark fruits, a small hint of whiskey barrels, and some caramel. Very complex, quite atypical for an impie stout with the pronounced fruitiness. The whiskey barrels are very subtle, providing a tasteful accentuation of the base beer. A bit too highly carbonated for the style, but not too detracting. I didn't like this beer at first, but after finishing my glass, I was convinced. Great stuff.

Bottle - Dark rich chocolate with only a hint of bitterness. Opaqu brown/black with a rich thick brown head. Nice sweet chocolate notes, very mild bitterness and a very mild finish. Very mellow and the coffee/chocolate doesn’t overwhelm. Body is much too light for this style though, I would of preferred something a little richer. Still a very good beer, I would happily drink this again.

Rating #3200. 2009 vintage. 341mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks a lot, Dany), pours a gorgeous dark ruby red with a medium beige head. Aroma is full of plums, raisins and black currants, with some caramel and syrupy honey sweetness. Flavour brings out lots of fresh pure honey, atop dark fruits galore (plums, raisins, currants, etc.), caramel and brown sugar. No hops at all by this point, but the beer is in solid balance without any cloying sweetness. However, I do detect a slight hint of oxidation, but not enough to detract much. The booze is very well-worked in but there is a noticeable warming effect. Excellent barley wine - certainly one of the best in Canada.

Bottle - Grains, malts and spices on the nose. Actually quite sweet smelling. Dark clear amber with a thin brown head. Bread, grains and malty. Spices are subdued and almost no bitterness. Fairly rich and at 6.6% definitely not something to drink all night.

Pours reddish brown, like the gouden carolus i just tasted. Not much head, a little lacing. Smells sugary. With some fermented fruit acidity and a lot of alcohol. Don’t detect a lot of hops and not very bitter for style. Mostly sweet. Some raisins or fermented grapes. Bottle from the rhino. Bottle has green wax but I didn’t see the cap. So i guess its from 2008. Gotta love the rhino for these gems.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks David Cohen. Clear deep golden. Floral and citric hops aroma with subdued skunky notes. Hoppy flavor, citric and floral, with light maltiness and a nice bitter finish. Medium-bodied. Quite pleasant.
