Description
Hanssens Artisanaal is the oldest independent geuze blender in the whole world. At Hanssens, no beer is actually brewed! Instead, they pursue a profession that was very important in the history of lambic style beers, they are solely blenders of beer.

Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

Pours bright amber into a tumbler. Started to foam up the head of the bottle, but quickly disspated when poured into the glass. Leather and horseblanket aromas. Light bodied and fizzy with tart, sour lemon peel flavors. Dry and lasting sour lactic finish.

Draught Hazy, deep red colour, nearly purple; no head. Acetic onslaught and VERY sour cherries. Adstringent in the extreme. Somewhat softer taste, "sweeter" - or fruitier than the nose, but still a lot of acetic acid. This is really more vinegar dressing than drinking beer. OUCH my enamel!

Aroma has brett, yeast, and cherry as well as acid. A cloudy pink beer; nearly still. Very sour and acidic but the cherry is part of the sour flavor. Not harsh at all, but much too sour for someone who doesn’t enjoy lambic.

Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm. Clear deep wine red. Tart aroma of lingonberries and cherries. Very dry. Almost still with rounded mouthfeel. Really acidic, but with very litltle barnyard character. Fairly straightforward, but very good.

Bottle at Reading BF 06. You could hear these bottles being opened clear across the tent. I told the barmaid to be careful, but she didn’t listen and therefore she gave a heart attack to everyone else stood at the bar when the cork hit the tent roof. Gold cloudy beer with bubbly off white head. Sour aroma typical of gueuze. Bit of farmyard. Slight sweet edge. This is wonderful though.

Bottled Brugs de’ Beertje 04-11-05. The fourth of my trip into the mysterious world of Acid beers. The fantastic bar lady in this bar seem’s so chuffed that I am continuing with these beers and tells me that this one is made with real cherries unlike many other’s that have flavouring and syrups added. This is a belter and the best thus far. Hazy amber colour small white head. Again their is a initial sharpness but for the first time I find this tempered but a little more sweetness and I like that balance. Wonderful cherry taste and this one like the others get’s better with each sip once your tongue has become accustomed to the tartness, very, very good.

Bottled Brugs de’ Beertje 04-11-05. The third in my dip into the world of Acid beers and the best so far, despite it giving my tongue one hell of a work over. This one really zap’s you with it’s sharpness my friends around the table are looking at me as If I have got a screw loose and their faces contort as they take a sip. Again it get’s better with each sip and again I still don’t feel particularly well qualified to descibe all of the tastes in here, but at times it’s like taking a big bite out of a bramley cooking apple, there is some sweetness, and a lingering taste, very good.

Bottle. Purple-amber beer with very little head. Tart aroma with an earthy woodsy sense. Just a bit of sweet cherry. Tart flavor with a bit of earthy yeastiness and some wood. Cherries and a bit of sweetness on the finish, but otherwise it’s a great tartness. Great palate cleanser.
