Description
Hanssens Artisanaal is the oldest independent geuze blender in the whole world. At Hanssens, no beer is actually brewed! Instead, they pursue a profession that was very important in the history of lambic style beers, they are solely blenders of beer.

Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

Explosive corked bottle, resulting in a big frothy head. The color is yellow, almost golden, the brew is clear.
The aroma is extremely pungent, I don’t understand which gas can make me jump back from the glass; with a bit more of precautions, I smell the typical Gueuze cellar aromas; I’m not sure of the honey, but I’m sure that there is also the smell of the Asian shops in Europe, a mix of stale and sour fruits, and something perfumy.
The mouthfeel is quite dry, less interesting than the aroma, with a reasonable astringency and some sourness, but without any complexity.
The palate is too short and empty.
It’s not bad, and it’s curious, but I feel it more like a sort of French corked cider than a Gueuze or a Mead or a mix of them.

Bottle
Hazy pink-golden, no head. Interresting aroma: Strawberries behind a veil of leather, a strong cognacy vinegar note and a mineralic note. The vinegar-leather-strawberry combo is evident in the flavor as well, horse-blanket, gets more fruity as it warms up - other estery notes, strawberry slips into the background, fizzlesticks in the back of the throat. Overall light on the palate, light sparkly mouthfeel, dry but not puckering exit.

My girlfriend bought this for us to share. She didn’t like it so I got to finish the bottle. Not at all sweet like so many of this style. Complex aroma. There is some strawberry; but it is light and I might not have noticed it if the label didn’t tell me to look for it. There is also mold, barnyard, yeast, and citrus. The flavor is very sour, with grapefruit, strange yeast and funkiness. Some moldy cheese. Dry finish with even more horseblanket and barnyard.

Old 1980s bottle (ca. 1987) with a pink trait in lieu of label. Red copper in colour, rusty, with a beige head. Notes of cherry, horseblanket and lactic acid. Smoooooth! Not harsh at all, all in softness, welll blended with soft sweetness of cherries, and light acidic points. Was told this was sweetended with sachharin. Bottle shared with Joris, Ursel, May 2 2005. A big dank u!

1987: Hazy orange gueuze with a thin white head. Wonderfull full aroma with orange zest, animal musk, soil in a cave, and the inevitable horseblanket. In mouth, divine acidity, intense and wonderful in mouth with notes of sour cherries and earth. Rich and complex marriage of lactic and acetic acids. Terribly good. (10-4-9-5-18). Thanks Joris!
2005: Opalescent clear orange amber gueuze with thick white head. Intense horseblanket aroma with grapefruit pulp, freshly pressed. Lighter bodied than 1987 version . more citric acid. Lot more citrusy, Very Refreshing (8-4-8-4-16). Bought at brewery April 2005. (Tasting June 2005, with Dumdum)

Bottle. Gusher - cork popped off as wire cage was loosened. Golden beer with a big foamy off-white head. Tart aroma of green apples and some honey sweetness. Huge carbonation - had to let it settle a bit. Tart flavor - lemon and green apple with a bit of sweetness. Some lemon lingering. Nicer when carbonation is a bit less.

Bottle. 2000 Vintage (says limited edition, but aren’t all beers). Copper colored with no head. Light fruitiness (berry) and tart aroma with some dustiness - at least it starts out ok. Some strawberry flavor then a harsh tart/vomit/chemical flavor. Just not drinkable. It has a mouthfeel showing some chucnkiness. My guess is a bad bottle, and wow was this one bad.

Bottled. Deep red colour with small brownish hints. Small head. Cherry in aroma, kind of bitterish. Dry bitter cherry in flavour. A bit alcohol in flavour too, very dry aftertaste.

Bottled
Deep cherry red, small white head. Sour, fruity nose, not cherry found here. Sourish, but same time quite sweet cherry flavor. Big difference to other Hanssens I’ve sampled is lack of barnyard notes. Balanced kriek.
