Hanssens Artisanaal
Microbrewery
in Dworp,
Flemish Brabant,
Belgium 🇧🇪
Associated Venue: Hanssens Artisanaal
Established in 1871
Hanssens takes this a step further, and actually blends batches from different breweries in their area. This used to be a very common practice, but Hanssens is now the oldest remaining blender. They bring to this endeavor a variety of barrels, some up to one hundred years old, and a passion and a love for the tradition of Geuze and Lambics.

Bottle, St Albans Beer Festival 2005. Copper colour. Sour beer, quite nice fruit and a bit of rubber. Nicely sour and intense lambic

Less sour than the other gueuzes I have had, surely due to the mead. Citrus and yeast aroma. Assertive nutmeg finish, and still a very sour beer by any standard. Not as complex as it could be.

Brass coloured with a small but compact head. Acidic, earthy aroma. Acidic flavour of rhubarbs and unripe apples with an earthy tone.

375 ml bottle, corked champagne style, at Plan B, Copenhagen. Red / "pinkish" / brown colour, moderate pale pink head. Sour cherry and funky barnyard aroma. Flavour is very sour cherries and red wine vinegar.

Golden amber colour. Almost no head or carbonation. Typical lambic/barnyard aroma with just a hint of strawberries. Tart and very dry flavour with the strawberries being very subtle.

(Bottle 37,5 cl) I would’ve believed that the more subtle strawberry flavours would be completely buried by the tart lambic, but that was fortunately not the case. Initial strawberry aroma, disturbed by some vinegary touches. Strawberry aroma, even sweetness, held completely in check by the sour lambic. But a well made fruit beer. 290602

(Bottle 37,5 cl) Simply called "Hanssens Kriek" at 5% ABV. No label on the bottle. The fruit flies had found this beer before me - hundreds of them were buzzing around the slightly leaky bottles in the drinks shop- They for sure liked this beer.
Reddish brown and very flat. Extremely sour, vinegary nose making your nostrils contract almost completely. The cherries do however leave a slight hint of sweetness on your tongue. Quite an exceptional experience, but one I could’ve done without. 110700 (Bottle 37,5 cl) As "Hanssens Oude Kriek". I reckon this in principle is the same beer as the above, but not a bit stronger - and with a label.
More red than brown, small head with a pinkisk tint. Even some carbonation. Still a very sour Kriek, but not quite as extreme as the old version. 110700

(Bottle 37,5 cl) As "Hanssens Gueuze" at 5% ABV. I remember when I first found this years ago in the drink market "De Cagny Brothers" in Essen. In a wooden box in a corner I found a few crown corked bottles with no labels or anything. But a large swarm of fruit flies were buzzing around the cork which was leaking slightly. Not the most hygienic or well-presented beer...
Orangey golden with very little head. Vinegary, sour, citrusy nose. Very tart but complex flavours of....horseblanket? Well, to be honest I haven’t really smelled a horseblanket for several years. Earthy notes and a long sour palate. A taste-bud killer indeed. 030498 (Bottle 37,5 cl) As "Hanssens Oude Gueuze". Very orangey golden with a small, discreet head. a smell of fruits in the early stages of rot. Very complex gueuze and actually quite drinkable. Hasn’t got the very sharp, vinegary edge as other traditionals in the style. 120700

Cloudy burgundy color, paling to a golden at the edges. Modest carbonation, small to no head. Aroma strong, some leather, cherries, maybe even apples and cranberries. Flavor: acidic doesn’t even begin to describe this! Quite sour!! Easily the sourest beer I’ve had, puckering and eye watering. Dry tart bite in the finish; causes a little indigestion on an empty stomach. Fun but limit yourself to one glass! (I tackled most of the 750!)

(375ml unlabelled bottle with a red chalk mark, bought in 1996) Cloudy amber colour with a tiny fizzy slightly off-white layer. Acidic vineos aroma with traces of horseblanket and only a shy fruity nose; cherries are hardly detectable. Initially a very short sweetness that harms the sharp sourness a bit. Very sour taste but well balanced with its fruitiness of small apples (as used for Cidre or Applewine). Lasting tart and vinous finish. Better digestible as the Oude Gueuze from Hanssen.
