Description
Fiddlehead Brewing Company is located just outside of Burlington, VT in the scenic town of Shelburne. Our owner and Brewmaster Matt “Matty-O” Cohen opened the doors on New Year’s Eve of 2011 and since then we have gained worldwide acclaim with our lineup of approachable, multidimensional beers.
When we first opened in 2011, we did so with a completely manual 15 barrel system and just 30 barrels of capacity. Within the first month Fiddlehead IPA, the flagship ale, was on tap with at over 50 bars and restaurants in Vermont.
With the immediate success, we quickly outgrew the 3,000 sq foot space that was split between retail and production. After the last fermenter was added in 2015, we knew we needed a bigger boat.
In January of 2017, our brand new 10,000 sq foot brewery opened for production just behind the tasting room. The added space meant room for more fermenters as well as some much needed upgrades like a laboratory, grain silo, office space, and our own canning line. This expansion has allowed us to increase distribution of kegs and cans within our home state, branch into New York and Massachusetts, and renovate our tasting room (coming soon!).
While we do not currently offer tours of our production facility, our knowledgeable tasting room staff is always happy to chat about our beers and the brewing process. Our beer can be found on draft or in cans at over 650 Vermont establishments as well as an increasing number of locations around Massachusetts and New York State.
The tasting room remains at the original Shelburne Rd. location, as do countless memories of where it all began.

Poured into a pint glass, the appearance was a glossy yellow transparent color. Sly carbonation could be seen rising at a decent pace. Finger’s worth of foamy head quickly dissipated. Some lace.
The aroma had some sweet to bitter grassy to citrusy hops flowing over some biscuity malts. Little hop spice kicks at the end.
The flavor blended all of the previously mentioned aromas together, hops to malts and leads into the aftertaste nicely. Subtle blended sort of finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body. Mild carbonation was felt. ABV felt fine. Lager smoothness flows nicely along my tongue.
Overall, nice pale lager showing some hoppy signs to be slightly creative.

Growlette share with Doug and Henry.
My sample would be poured into a tulip (that’s how I roll with my sours).
The appearance was a clean yellow transparent color with a thin white foamy head that glistened and then slid right on off into the beer.
The aroma had some green apple skin, freshly cut grass, some white pepper and then a little bit of lemon peel, somewhat sour but really pulling an ample amount of some damp hay bits, perhaps somewhat like a saison, interesting, but I find acceptable.
The flavor keeps the sour portion of the lemon rind hitting against the green apple skin. Nice fresh clean grassy sweetness really keeping the broadside of the sour underscored. Slick sour apple skin/grassy to lemon peel in the aftertaste to ride on into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a somewhat odd sessionability about this one (I don’t find many sour ales to be sessionable). This one seems to beckon me to thrust right on down my throat. White pepper portion doesn’t seem to spice anything in the feel here like I smelled, just seems to only have been there in the aroma. Carbonation seemed to have felt fine. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, I’m suspecting Fiddlehead is wanting to brew a session sour ale here as the ABV I see and feel seems susceptible to \"gulpibility,\" if that’s a word. If this catches on, well, hell, look who started this gig, haha, nice one, Fiddlehead!

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a soft hazy yellow color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that gently dissipated. Sly rugged lace.
The aroma had some sharp bitter orange peel up front and then a slight lemon to grapefruit bitterness making it’s way to blend. Soft transient malts balance nicely.
The flavor is fully bittersweet, locked on the blend between the malts and the hops. Very nice. Well balanced bittersweet aftertaste following through on the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Good embracing carbonation. ABV felt appropriate.
Overall, very nicely done APA, almost AIPA with the strength of the bitterness. Would definitely have again.

Keg at The Farmhouse, Burlington. Hazy amber, small head. Distinct aroma of pears, grapefruit and papaya. Mid sweet with medium-full body and clean, rounded mouthfeel. Syrup and caramel cuts through the thick hop curtain. Almost metallic bitterish finish. Hops are there, but it is otherwise edgy and basic.

Poured into a tulip, the appearance was a dark bready orange color with a thin finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Lacing is there, somewhat stringy.
The aroma had some bready malts playing with a huge citrusy/grapefruity bittersweetness. Slight spiciness, somewhat like coriander.
The flavor starts off with the citrusy/grapefruity hoppiness. Bready malts come in and then the spiciness, somewhat seeming for blending purposes. Sly grassiness and then the bready to spicy and citrusy aftertaste rolling into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body with a fair sessionability about it. Mild carbonation and ABV felt right as well.
Overall, good Belgian pale ale that I could come back to.

Poured into a nonic pint glass, the appearance was a copper color with a thin white foamy head that dies off fairly quick. Sly lacing.
The aroma had a blend of peach/apricot sweetness to some grassy sweet hops.
The flavor yields to the sweet side through the prior fruits mentioned. Lingering fruity sweet aftertaste sliding into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a crisp sessionability about it. Low carbonation and barely any bitterness makes for thirst quencher in the Summer.
Overall, good for what it is, preferably again in the Summer.

On tap at Vermont Tap House.
This was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a ruddy yellow color. Finger’s worth of white foamy head quickly dies off. Sly sticky lace.
The aroma blends superbly between the sweet and the bitter of the citrus pulpy juiciness and rind. Subtle grasping sweet oats.
The flavor blends wonderfully again between the sweet and the bitter. Adding the sweet of the oats to slide on into the aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a sly sipping to sessionable trait quaffing my tongue nicely.
Overall, nicely done DIPA. Of course, I’d have again.

Growler: Poured a black color porter with medium size foamy head with good retention. Aroma consist of notes of vanilla and chocolate notes with hints of hazelnut. Taste is a nice but intense mix of hazelnut, vanilla and chocolate notes with some flavors resembling tiramisu. Body is about average with creamy texture and good carbonation. Nice but flavors are extreme and end up being overwhelming.
