GABF2009 - holy hell! - this beer is huge in more ways than one - loads of sour cherry, fruit skin tannins, and light earthy funk in the nose, with a light touch of oak and acidity - date, raisin, sour cherry and other dark, heavy fruits in the flavor - warming, but not overpowering alcohol - some earthy wildflower honey qualities through the middle - red wine and oak characteristics cut the sweetness - this is some serious stuff.

Gravity cask, one-third pint from the USA bar, GBBF 09. Black as pitch, possible a bit cloudy. Bubbly low beige head. Sweet smell of lacteal malts and hoppy fruits. Comprehensive flavour of dark caramel, slightly roasted, nicely followed by a good amount dark fruits. Sophisticated porter, very pleasing (Earls Court, 06.08.2009).

(Gravicask at GBBF, London Earl’s Court, 6 Aug 2009) Dark brown colour, almost black. Brief, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of coffee and chocolate. Roasted, malty taste with coffee, dark chocolate, toffee, a touch of liquorice and citrussy hops in the finish. More than medium body, fairly sweet. Very nice and tasty porter.

One-third pint, draught, 10.5% abv. Shiny black surface with a deep, pitch black body. Aroma of smoked malts with hints of vanilla oak. Very pleasant taste of mid-sweet plums, prunes, coffee and anise overlaid by a touch of dark spices. Vinous texture. Modest alcohol heating. Delicious mouthfeel and a very nice sipper. In fact, this one turned out to be one of my best bite at the GBBF (London, 04.08.2009).

On tap. Hazy golden with an off-white head. Fruity, Bretty nose. Medium body, dry and lightly citrusy with very dry Brett accents. Very little Belgian inspiration to be found here. 110709
