Description
The Tollgate Brewery story began in 2005 on the old Woodville site of Brunt, Bucknall & Co, known as the Wooden Box Brewery, the first brewery to be established in the Burton area in 1832. Woodville was formerly Wooden Box, named after the famous toll booth on the road between Ashby de la Zouch and Burton-upon-Trent. The area around the Woodville roundabout (the modern equivalent of the toll booth) is still known as ‘Tollgate’ from which our brewery takes its name.

In 2012 Tollgate Brewery relocated to the National Trust Calke Abbey Estate due to a strong desire from the team at Calke Abbey and the National Trust to bring brewing back to the Estate. In January 2016 a change of ownership brought together the current brewery team. Tollgate Brewery currently occupies one of the National Trust’s farm buildings built in the nineteenth century. We’re a 6-barrel brewery using traditional brewing techniques that would be recognisable to those early brewers in the 1800’s.

On gravity, at Barrow Hill Beer Festival - Clear pale golden with a white head. Fruity hops and malt in the aroma. Flavour is rather dry and citric hoppy with a hint of malt and wooden notes. Dry, hoppy finish. Rather good.

Cask handpull at KIT Sheffield. LIGHTISH brown colour. Lasting beige head. Now that is a tasty brown malty bitter. Not enough of these around these days. Not stupidly tight sparklers neither. Some leafy bettle subtle hop sting finish. Decent.bu

Cask, handpull at The Guildford, Edinburgh, with Craig, Stella & Kids, Jan, Charlotte & Loz, 30.10.10 Classic amber with white bubbly head. There is a light maltiness and fruitiness, I get a sort of dusty furniture thing with this, the hops are a bit shy and its all a tad too sfae. A6 A3 T6 P3 Ov11 2.9

Bottle courtesy of my dad, had this 28-06-08 Some fruit and malts combine on the aroma of this copper coloured beer. Its fruity and there’s some citrus other than that I’m struggling to find much else, though it tastes fine I suppose.

Bottle that dad bought along this week having purchased from a bottle shop in Belper, consumed 10-04-08 Pours chesnut in colour with a rapidly diminishing tan head. Some good tasty earthy hoppiness to this beer and maybe I am getting some hints of whisky nalong wioth a light wafting of alcohol and maltiness on the nose, Not bad at all.
