2001 vintage. I enjoyed this at Delilah’s 12th annual Winter Beer Tasting in Chicago, IL. From what I remember this was partially sour with an interesting malt/spice profile. Was rather average, especially for the vintage.

2005 version at Plan B, Copenhagen. Dark ruby red colour, nice, misty. A complex heavy malty nose, raisins, very light acidic notes, weak chocolate, alcohol. Warming sweet raisiny balanced malty, rosehip, bit dry, vaguely acidic to balance everything out, almost a sublime sipper. Bitterish salty but light & well integrated aftertaste. Not my type of ale but I can see why this is so respected. 7/4/7/4/14 (19.9.2010)

Bottle on 09/15/2010 to celebrate Butters 2000th rating. Very clear copper body with a very small frothy white head. Sweet floral and earthy aroma with some tart notes. Surprisingly pleasant tart fruit and earthy malt flavor, lots of rich fruit. Medium light body with moderately low carbonation. I’m sure this wasn’t supposed to be a sour beer, but I like the way it works out.

Bottle Vintage 1996 thanks to ditmier. Pours out a dark mahogany with no head. Aroma was pit fruit, dust, caramel, and some wine notes. Taste was much as the aroma with the wine notes leading the way. Always fun to try something with some age on it.

275 ml bottle labeled #4929, bottled 1996. Very dark maroon, no head or lacing, no legs either. Aroma of slightly sour port wine, raisins, plums. Taste is oily, vinuous, resiny, with sour cherries, grapes. No bitterness. Good example of the style.

275ml Bottle - Copper coloured. Leather, dried fruit, malt, nuts and vinous hints feature in the aroma. Warming taste with malt, caramel, nuts and some hints of dried fruit. A real cracker and I have to say that I drank this with mixed emotions - pleased that I have been able to try it, but sad that Gales closed.

Found this in my local bottle shop. Let’s see what 13 years does for a beer. Vinous cashew and must nose, with caramel undercurrents. Dingy brown, thin yellow head, poor retention. Persimmon with caramel hints. Alcohol burn that is only slightly out of place. Not great and probably too old.
