On tap at St. Augustine's, pours a cloudy orange amber with a small white head. Aroma is very fruity, with stone fruits, light spice and caramel maltiness also upfront. Flavour is very rough, with a big caramel malt backbone upfront, rye notes, and some resinous hops. Too much malt and a very rough hop profile. A very messy beer. 6 3 6 3 13 3.1 / 5

Just like fiulijn, I sampled this at the brewpub, and it was much better. Everything was in better balance and very cohesive. Strange how messed it up it got on the way to Vancouver. 7 4 8 4 15 3.8 / 5

My rating blends my two experiences with the beer.

2015-04-06, draught at the brewpub, 20oz, 7-5-8-4-14=38
Hazy dark amber color with creamy head. Deeply spicy beer, with penetrating citrusy hops; strong bitterness: there is plenty of grapefruit peel too, and some passion fruit aroma; it’s a bit too earthy in the final.
Top conditions. Very satisfying.

2015-04-03, draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver, 6-4-6-3-12=31
Hazy brown color, small head. This one has a strong rye base, hence the aroma and flavor are not only spicy but they present a light coffee note; dry mouthfeel, quite weak; strong ending bitterness with some harsh hop resins, not much fruity character.
It’s a bit unbalanced, too harsh. A core rye IPA. Nothing bad with it, if this is what you are looking for.

Interesting combo, the licorice is much more pronounced than I would have thought, taste more so than aroma. Pours out like black motor oil, nice fluffy beige head, slick body. Aroma is combo of chocolate licorice and burnt toast. Taste is more robust, tons of anise/licorice. A bit sweet, and lots of lingering burn.

Cask at Devil’s Elbow; 4.6% ABV, 12oz, dry hopped with Centennial
Cloudy amber color with frothy head. Reasonable Pale Ale, smooth and undercarbonated; it doesn’t have special malt or hop flavors; but on the downside it’s fairly buttery.
Not a bad beer, but the grapefruit can be more evident, the hops must be more fruity and pungent, and the diacetyl shouldn’t have place here.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Black color with thin beige creamy head. A good chocolate beer, the mouthfeel is soft, not weak, it had light residual sweetness; hints of fire-wood and smoke, the bourbon is not too evident, although there is a light vanilla touch.
Nice, enjoyable.
