Draught @ Lingl, Neuhaus. Finally :-). Pours clear Golden copper with a small White head. Slight flappy nose. A bit of cardboard. Touch of green apple, soft bread and floral notes. A shame - not entirely fresh. 3.4

Day 2 of Zoigl-trinken. Very happy to find this one as this brewery was closed last time I was here AND this time. First time in this hotel restaurant, nothing special but definitely friendly. Good Zoigl, grassy, fairly citrusy. Crispy, fresh.

The homemade (though of course brewed at the Kommunbrauhaus) Zoiglbier at Bahler in Neuhaus, drank at their Bierstube there in the charming company of an elderly local couple. Eggshell-white, moussey, membrane-lacing, medium thick, stable head on a near clear, pale orangey old-golden robe. Aroma of honey, sweetclover, red apple, soggy sandwiches, chamomile, minerals, touch brioche, smoked ham, strawbales. Malty, clean onset, very pure and natural, moderate carb with minerally side notes; smooth brioche- and white-bready maltiness with grainy edges, gradually bittered by floral, bit spicy, leafy, even somewhat rooty hops, staying well in balance with the malts; retronasally, a whiff of sweet honey or even apple pops up, which was not present in the other two Zoigl examples I had here. Deliciously pure and honest, old school Bavarian Lager.

Zoigl from Teicher, at their Bierstube. Medium sized, snow white, moussey, stable head on a near clear, amber-tinged old golden robe with thin strings of sparkling. Aroma of dry biscuit, thyme, bread crust, field flowers, minerals, unripe peach, dried apple peel, hints of sweat, moist cellar and damp earth. Malty onset, minerally carb, a bit sharp, rounded cereally malts with thinly biscuity core, soon bittered by 'green', very floral, leafy hops with long drying bitterness, while retronasally, a whiff of damp cellar appears, adding complexity in its own particular way. Feels very authentic and 'old', for a Lager - I rarely had Lagers with this kind of finesse and layeredness. Worth the trip all the way to the Oberpfalz!

Zoigl served at Schafferhof in Neuhaus, 50 cl from tap there. Membrane-lacing, pillowy, egg-white, thick and stable head on a clear, warm golden beer with 'old gold' glow and strings of visible fizz. Aroma of freshly baked bread, spice bread, rusk, dried chamomile, white pepper, dried thyme, cheese rind, minerals. Malt-fruity onset, lightly sweetish, softish carb, smooth bread-crusty malts, fresh 'baguette' and spice bread, refinedly spicy hops, very floral, dried herbs, mildly but effectively bitter, while the bread-crustiness persists. Lovely old-fashioned, very Bavarian Lager - perfect on a hot summer evening in the Oberpfalz!

Tap at Lingl, yay (11.11.2023). Full golden body, white head - pretty lasting. Buttery aroma, sweetish maltines... sigh... I was warned about this by Ryan who's had it the day before. The taste, however, is a step up - the diacetyl is more mild, the clean maltiness shows, some minerally touches, vague herbal notes, but almost no bitterness. I mean, I could finish it, but reading some other reviews, I'm just disappointed a little. Shows potential - the body's quite good, shame it didn't rest as much as it should have...

Tap at Zum Waldhauser / Waldhauser Zoigl - roughly 5 times (hey, Ryan had something like 10 :D) and then one more at Zum Waldnaabtal. Hazy golden body, off-white head. Herbal hoppiness on top of pillowy maltiness in the aroma, floral touches. Soft floral taste, belying a persistent carbonation, ending, through a soft maltiness, in a bitter, growing finish. Wow! While undoubtedly German, it has BohPils-like balance, and that serves it great!
