Description
Kirkstall Brewery was inspired by the rich brewing history of Kirkstall village, which later formed part of the city of Leeds. The brewing company boasts a rich history spanning from the 12th century, where the Cistercian monks founded Kirkstall Abbey and began the area’s brewing legacy. The original Kirkstall Brewery was founded in 1871 and was in operation till 1983 when it was closed by its last owners, Whitbread. The buildings have been well preserved and are now home to students of Leeds Metropolitan University. The new Kirkstall Brewery is located on the Leeds Liverpool canal, in the shadow of the original brewery, reviving the tradition of brewing in Kirkstall and the inspiration to once again make the name famous for great beer.

On tap at the Euston Tap. Cloudy purple - red beer. Tiny pink head. Light crisp palate. Sweet fruits, sweet and tart at the same time. Raspberry with generic red berries. A little apples and pears in there. An orchard delight!

Keg at the Euston Tap, London. Pours opaque, dim red with a filmy, white foam head. Big, fresh ripe raspberry, light hints of tartness. Medium sweet, faintly tart with hints of spice. Very juicy and thick. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly tangy to finish with tons of concentrated raspberry. Pretty sweet but there’s just enought tartness to cut into it a bit. Good stuff.

On tap @ the Haymarket Bar. Pours hazy, amber with a proportionate head. The nose has grapefruit and some pale malt in the background. The taste has more of the same. The palate is medium bodied and textured with a clean finish. Overall, a nice beer.

Cask at Southampton Arms, London on 29th April 2012. Pale amber with thin off-white foam. Citric hoppy aroma. Grapefruit hoppiness and grassy bitterness in-mouth and finish that’s both bitter and grapefruity citric. Satisfying.

Cask at The Coal Hole, Nicholson’s, London. Pours clear, rich gold with a foamy, white head. Leaves and hay in the nose. Some citrusy sweetness in the flavor, generic leafy/grassy bitterness, some hay. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly sticky sweet finish, somewhat heavy on the tongue, with grassy bitterness that seems somewhat artificial and some toasted hay. Average, very average.

Cask, handpump at The Grove, Huddersfield 17.03.12 in company of dad & Barry Good double IPA but for me very much in the style of an American DIPA. Malty up front and a little sweet but though I suggested it is very much American in style I think that is not to be take to literally as it has a very English edge, touch syrupy, thick in the mouth, hoppy but not too much. Good stuff. A7 A4 T8 P4 Ov15 3.8
