Cask. Rutland Arms, Sheffield. Clear, pale gold. Bubbly, messy, white head. This has a lot a Czech Pils might have. It’s aromatic, and clean, and a bit spicy. But then it’s been put in a cask, and served through a hand pump, which for me, has rendered it dull, and a bit hard work. There’s a decent beer in there somewhere.

Cask-conditioned at the Gardener’s Rest, Sheffield, 2/12/2014 as "Xmas Stout". Near black in colour, with a thin, beige, head. Decent, roasted malts, a touch of chocolate, vague spicing and some porridge oats, before a dryish finish. Good.

On cask at Coach and Horses, Dronfield - a bit light for a porter, easy on the nose and palate, and very drinkable. Missing the usual smoky notes and bitter aftertaste I’d expect, but still one I’d recommend.
