Description
Maxim Brewery began full production in Houghton le Spring in 2007.

To brew the best beers possible requires the best brewery equipment available. Our 20 barrel brewery equipment was previously at the Canongate Brewery on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. This was Scottish & Newcastle’s pilot brew house and as you would expect, was built to a very high specification. Indeed, it remains probably the best equipment of its size anywhere in the UK today. Our flexible Brewery with its special Lautering system allows us to brew between 3,000 and 17,000 pints per day and importantly ensures that we can maintain the highest quality and guarantee a regular supply of cask, keg and bottled beers to the drinkers of the North East and beyond.

Cask ale, half pint at the Winter Ales Festival at the New Oxford pub in Salford. Mahogany coloured body with a deep ruby shade. Lacing rings down the glassware. Inviting aroma of earthy malts added by liquorice. The taste profile is a nice mix of dark fruits, aniseed and mid-sweet, dark chocolate malt. Dry fruity ending. Soft in the mouth. Pleasant (Greater Manchester, 27.01.2013).

500ml bottle. Clear dark brown copper-amber colour, frothy off-white head leaving some lacing, and aroma of fruity caramel & bread with roasted and nutty notes. The taste is sweetish malt caramel, some spicy bitterness through to the finish, turning earthy dry with a metallic edge. Medium bodied & moderate carbonation. OK.

Cask at Market Porter. Clear dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth and softish and semi dry. Very modest carbonation. Quite sweet porter. Sweet tangy fruits with a mellow dark malt that carries a little dark chocolate. Finishes semi dry with more sweetness. Not bad.

Amber beer with a frothy, off-white head. A light, malty aroma and the flavour is malt and a fruity edge too. Pleasant but not special.

Pale yellow coloured ale with a small golden glow. Has a very small head and full of citrus notes that give it a tangy sour taste.
