To brew the best beers possible requires the best brewery equipment available. Our 20 barrel brewery equipment was previously at the Canongate Brewery on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. This was Scottish & Newcastle’s pilot brew house and as you would expect, was built to a very high specification. Indeed, it remains probably the best equipment of its size anywhere in the UK today. Our flexible Brewery with its special Lautering system allows us to brew between 3,000 and 17,000 pints per day and importantly ensures that we can maintain the highest quality and guarantee a regular supply of cask, keg and bottled beers to the drinkers of the North East and beyond.

Festival ale, from cask, one-third pint at Penderels Oak. Deep, dark brown coloured body. Disappearing layer, spotty lacing. Mild malty aroma, hints of dried fruits. Liquorice malts offset by dusty hops in flavour. Dry bitter endnotes. Middle of the road (London, 01.11.2012).

Crosse Keys Spoons. Clear brown beer, good off white head. Palate is light and a little dry. Mild carbonation. Sweet milky yohgurt taste! Lacto infection? Bitter hoppy dry finish. Weird!

[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading] Deep chestnut with a thick white head. A bit of treacle. Some dry, roasty malts. A little chocolate. Unexciting, not really much to this beer.

Cask at The Greyhound (JDW), Maidenhead. Reddish chestnut with a tight cream head; muted earthy malt aroma; rich and creamy in the mouth, dry and malty with some burnt toffee; then a dry and earthy finish. A pleasing Brown Ale.

Cask at Hamilton Hall, JDW, London. Pours clear, rich golden-brown with a fine, white cream head. Brown bread nose. Medium sweet flavor with rich brown bread, toasty sugars, faint chocolate. Light to medium bodied with fine, lightly chewy carbonation. Swet finish with more toasted sugars, tasty brown bread, very mellow bitterness. Decent stuff.

Cask handpull at Westgate Spoons Canterbury. Deep brown colour. Quite a malty beer. Not a huge aroma. Dryish finish. Malty briwn ale. Simple. Ok.

Cask at Shakespeares, Sheffield. Reddish brown clear pour with a bubbly broken head. An amazingly rich fruity aroma with raisin notes. Quite a sweet ale with medium bitterness and very little on the palate. Its 6% but the alcohol isnt overpowering. This is one for a winter fireside. A heart warming ale!
