Can from Lupe Pintos. Dark brown body with a thin beige head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, redcurrants, sea saltand charred wood. Flavour of pine, chocolate and tea. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. This verges into Black IPA territory - it’s very bitter and hoppy.

Cask @ Fox & Goose, Hebden Bridge. Hazy pale dishwasher-gold in appearance with a small creamy head. Has light tropical fruit in both aroma and taste, but equally a hoppy effort too

24-27/10/2023. From the wood at the 45th Norwich Beer Festival. Pours very dark murky brown with minimal off-white to beige head. Aroma is woody, earthy, chocolate, toffee, dark fruits, light smoke, roasted malt, biscuit, burnt sugar. Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness, light woody sourness. Medium body, smooth, soft carbonation. Quite complex, good wood work.

Handpull cask at the Two-Tailed Lion, Leicester. Clear light to mid-gold with a small film of white head. Light musty aroma, dried grass and light astringency, not getting a lot of hop from this one. Sweet taste, notes of white grape, some grapefruit just at the finish. Watery body with very little on the way of carbonation. Just about okay.

Cask at Hops d’Amour, Coventry on 26th October 2023. Hazy pale amber with shallow foam and scant lacing. Aroma of stone and orchard fruits. Hoppy and fruity in-mouth, and a finish of mild caramel malt and ripening fruits. Light body and a zingy mouthfeel.

Keg @ Exchange Craft Beer House, Bradford. Near black with roasted malt available in both aroma and taste, crisp and flavoursome with its strength giving a good body without interfering with flavour. Not particularly a 'brown' ale in design, more stout-like.

Cask @ Shrewsbury Real Ale Festival 2023. Pours an unclear pale gold, white head. Certainly a lot paler than I was expecting from a barley wine, and not really very rich or sweet either. Floral aroma, flavour profile has mild stonefruit, earthy flora. Not quite what I would associate with a barley wine. Odd.
