Description
Housed beneath The Rat and Ratchet and since the very first brew of Lab Rat in 2011, head brewer, Paul Spencer and brewer Robin Moss, have created rodent themed beers to critical acclaim. Our beers are distinctive, extreme, generally intensely hopped and anything but average, experimenting with a range of different beer styles, strengths and ingredients. Rat beer is now infecting all four corners of the UK faster than the Black Death, turning a local infestation into a national plague. White Rat in particular has emerged as the flagship beer and now sits within the Ossett core range.

Cask at the Rat & Ratchet, Huddersfield on 9th July 2022. Clear gold with creamy white foam and full lacing. Bitter hop aroma. Solid bitterness in-mouth and finish, with hazelnut maltiness. Smooth mouthfeel and plenty of body. Exquisite.

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small cream head. Chocolate and malts to the fore in the aroma. Immediate reaction in the mouth, is how sweet and watery it is. However, flavour does come through in due course. Chiefly roasted malts but with good helpings of milky chocolate and a little coffee and hints of fruit. It’s OK, but Rat have done better beers than this.

Cask @ The Pub (formerly Calans), Hebden Bridge. Very dark with a thick creamy off-white head. It has smooth tasting light roasted malts and is an easy-drinking dark malt brew.

Hand-pulled half-pint in Skipton on 19th November 2021. Tan head on a near black body, looked good. Malty with a leather and liquorice twist in both the aroma and taste, dark chocolate arrives late in the brew.
