Description
Barney’s started brewing at Summerhall in July 2012 in time to supply the venue’s Royal Dick Bar for the Fringe, but Barney himself began brewing aged 16 as a brewery apprentice. After bagging a first class degree in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University and packing in a high flying career promoting rum and whisky around the world, Barney decided it was high time he started to brew his own beer.

In doing so, his immaculate microbrewery has injected new life into Edinburgh’s brewing history, not least because he’s chosen to resurrect a brewery at Summerhall where beer has been brewed off and on for three centuries.

Bottle picked up at Lidl Inverurie. It pours clear brown with a small, bubbly white head. The aroma is earthy, sticky, resinous, umami, savoury, canned beans and some sweetness. The taste is dry, touch of bitterness, oily, sticky, resinous, spicy, bit of rawness, canned beans, pretty savoury, soap and some bitter citrus peel with a drying finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. A unique combo for sure. Not sure I would rush back though.

330ml bottle from Lidl. Clear copper with a thin off white head. Aroma is honey and caramel, flavour is sweet toffee with savoury notes which I assume come from the beans. A bit odd but not unpleasant

Can from Lidl. It pours hazy deep amber with an orangey hue and medium foamy white head. The aroma is hearty and rich, brown bread, sticky, resinous, brown bread, old leather sofa and a touch of grass. The taste is dry, bitter, rich, oily, resinous, pine, touch of orange marmalade, earth, light tannin and some toffee malt. Finish is dry and resinous. Old-skool West Coast resinous IPA. I like it for what it is. Hearty.
