Description
Red Duck started on the shores of Lake Purrumbete in 2005. Our first brewery was in the old dairy at Purrumbete Homestead, and when we were building the brewery, there was a breeding pair of Shelducks, with 7 ducklings, that were living nearby. So we named our beer after them.
We engineered and built our own brewhouse specifically to make world class ales. We brew using all natural ingredients. It’s a very hands on brewhouse, that makes hand crafted, real ales.
In the winter of 2011 we moved the brewery to Ballarat, with a view to increasing production and the range of our ales. We are still one of the smallest Micro-breweries in Australia, making on average 500 litres per brew. Our aim is to grow slowly, so we can focus on quality, not quantity.

Pours pale straw with a small head.Nose shows truckloads of raspberries with faint rhubarb in the background. A little doughy wheat is just noticeable underneath. That tart raspberry is amazing! Not much of the fruit transfers through as flavours. A little raspberry shows but otherwise its dominated by musty, cardboardy wheat.Carbonation could be a little higher to go with the light flavours.

Pours dark amber/copper with a lasting head.Nose shows a fair whack of sweet malt with nutty and caramel characters. some earthy herbal hops underneath. Pleasant but not particularly exciting.Flavours show similar malt but unfortunately there’s also a grainy character too it. Mild bitterness. Ends abruptly.Body seems a bit watery.

Pours murky brown with a rapidly fading head.Nose shows a little bit of earthy peat, loads of golden syrup, brown sugar and alcohol. Some spicy hops become apparent later.Flavours are more focussed on nutty malt and spices. Unfortunately the malt is a little cardboard-y.Body is somewhat watery.

Bottle. Very cloudy gold. Tiny off-white head completely gone in seconds. Aroma: oranges, spices (cardamon, white pepper, ginger) soft brown sugar, dough. Slightly carbonated mouthfeel. Spices much more prominent in the taste, which is also fruity with more pears and white peaches than oranges. Not very sweet at all. Spicy drying and mildly bitter finish with the first hint of alcohol. Get the feeling that this didn’t quite come off and there’s a much better beer lurking fairly close by.

Bottle, 12C. Dark copper with a small beige head. Aroma has slightly singed toffee, raisins, grass and a little lemon rind. Taste is moderately sweet with good malt complexity - there’s a little roasted/ burnt flavour, dried fruit and some chocolate. A little spice at the end. There’s a bit of old ale (of the Rev. James type) about this. Another Red Duck beer that’s subtle and slightly anachronistic.

Bottle. Very cloudy orange with a pink tinge. Small white head. Raspberry aroma with some wheat, citrus, vanilla. No trouble believing there’s rhubarb in there, but I doubt I’d pick it otherwise. Modest sweetness with sweet and tart fruit - the rhubarb’s slightly more obvious. Crisp wheaty finish with some tartness. A fair flavoured Wit.

Pours murky dark amber with a small quickly fading head.Nose shows some banana esters and spicy cloves, somewhat like a dunkelweiss. Underneath is lighter sweet malt, more like a tripel along with cherries and christmas spices. Also quite noticeable is a dirty malt character. Very interesting, pretty full-on but a bit of a mess.Similar problem with the flavours, but the dirty malt/fusels are more pronounced. Heaps of spices and alcohol.Carbonation should be higher.A good idea, but a bit messy.

Bottle. Slightly dirty amber with a beige head that’s less than a coat. Medium carbonation is a little excessive to my taste for this sort of thing. Aroma: flowers, apples, pears, biscuits. Taste: firm biscuity malt, hints of fruit, lots of flowers. Minerally bitter finish. Would have picked this as an English beer that had travelled unusually well. Good.
