Draught Thick cream head over fully hazy reddish brown-amber beer. Sweet, ever so slightly sickly rosewater nose, some light-coloured malts, rosewater, even a bit cheesy. Bitterish-sweet, quite fruity flavour, malts making out the finish. Medium bodied, but quite slick. Bit middle-of-the-road, too much rosewater hops.

Draught Small white head, reasonably stable over cloudy orange beer. Herbal, spicy nose, some grains, hibiscus. Grainy flavour, again spicy, bit of banana ester. Medium bodied, flavours falling away a bit fast. Average. I like their slogan, however: 3 brothers, 1 brewery, 0 shortcuts

Bottle from O’Brien’s, Athlone [120316]
Pitch black, frothy dirty tan head, some lacing
Aroma of rich dark malts, soft savoury notes, mellow roast, bit meaty, some soy
Taste of rich dark malts, soft mellow roast, some sweet dark malts underneath, bitter dark chocolate, savoury, soy, rich moreish flavour
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, soft sweet. Finish as main flavour, soft sweet, mellow roast, rich dark malt linger
Overall - Far better than the Max I had earlier - very nice porter. Better than the Joe coffee porter. Would be great on cask.

Bottle from O’Brien’s, Athlone [120316]
Golden, clear, no head, looked like a cider
Aroma of light fruits, soft sweet citrus, hint of peach
Taste of light pale malt, soft zest, destroyed by a strong plastic note, undrinkable
Palate - Flat as a pancake, thin body, fairly bitter, soft sweet. Finish dry, off linger
Overall - Thrown out, something went pear-shaped here

Bottle from O’Brien’s, Athlone [110715]
Jet black, big frothy deep tan head
Aroma of dark malts, soft mocha coffee, dab of dark toffee, mellow roast
Taste of dark fairly sweet malts, very mellow roast, mocha coffee, getting a dab of dark plain chocolate, good quality coffee, some rich malts in there, tasty
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, quite sweet, smooth texture. Finish as main flavour, rich dark malts, some dark cocoa
Overall - Decent porter - like it that the coffee roast is not overdone. Plenty of sweet dark malts offset the coffee roast, but certainly nothing like those awful chocolate box coffee creams
