Description
In 2010, David and Andy were looking down the barrel of economic downsizing in their industry. Looking at it as an opportunity instead of a problem, the two set out to take their basement hobby to a new level. The dream of all home-brewers; to go "legit" and open a commercial brewery, presented itself as a once in a lifetime opportunity. The two agreed upon a Nano Brewery (1 BBL brewhouse). Although they were hopeful it would be well received, they had no idea the amount of interest the locals had for craft beers. Along the way they found and hired on some awesome people to bring the brewery altogether. Blackrocks still brews beer at the original pub on 3rd St, as well as a 20 BBL production system in Marquette. two key ideas fuel Blackrocks on a day to day basis, always make the best beer possible and always have fun while doing it.

Very deep and dark brown coloured body with a pretty thin, single centimetre tall of-white and tan head that fades fairly quickly and just leaves a thin oily light brown head on top. Aroma of roasted malt and oatmeal, caramelised sugars, grain, earth, nuts, molasses and a deeper kick of pitted fruits , but no coconuts, at least in the nose. Medium-bodied; Fairly rich malty notes dominate with a great roasty profile with some oatmeal and molasses noticeable and a big kick of syrup (maple) and rich pitted fruits, especially on the end. Aftertaste is pretty strong, with a good balance of rich, nutty malts, some robust sweetness from toffee and caramelised sugars with some plums and pitted fruit on the end, but a lot of almond and nutty spiciness on the finish, which gives this a bit more punch overall. Overall, a pretty nice, balanced, smooth and flavourful, rich beer with a good nutty and sweet, pitted fruit quality that ends this pretty well. While there isn't any real coconutty flavours here, the richness makes this great, as does it's origin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Great to sample this from the UP there as it starts getting 'chilly' here in Washington (not really). I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Super One Foods in Marquette, Michigan on 04-August-2021 for US$9,99/six pack, canned on 08-January-2021 with the tagline 'Where is the Snow?', sampled at my house here in Washington, far removed from he UP of Michigan on 08-November-2021.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice two to three centimetre tall light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, oatmeal, graininess, molasses, a bit of pitted fruits and a heavy note of vanilla and icing sugar here. Medium-bodied; Relatively rich malts and oats show at first with a big molasses and pitted fruit set of flavours with some light alcohol towards the end and a strong vanilla finish. Aftertaste shows a lot of earthy, graininess from the malts with a big roastiness, almost a burnt note with some coffee at the end as well, but a lot of rich, robust notes dominate here and don't provide much sweet balance, especially at the end. Overall, a nice rich and very roasty, earthy and grainy beer with a lot of earthiness and some rustic quality, but there is a dose of sweetness from vanilla and cream to temper the flavours somewhat. Overall, a nice deeper stout with a lot of rich notes, especially from the oats, malt and earthiness, but also from some molasses and pitted fruits. Nice to sample, especially in the colder months, even far removed from the really cold areas of the UP of Michigan! I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Merchant's in Dearborn, Michigan on 10-December-2018 for US$2,79 sampled at my house here in Washington in February 2019.
