Description
Big Boss has been through a lot of incarnations. In 1996 Tomcat Brewing started which became Pale Ale (it was really owned by the same people), then it became Rock Creek, and that’s when Brad Wynn became involved. Rock Creek became Chesapeake Bay for a very short time and nearly went under. We came back and started Edenton, and then, fortunately, Geoff Lamb bought it and we became Big Boss.

Draft guest at Gibb’s Hundred courtesy of Ross, thank you sir! Hazy to cloudy golden color, white head. Aroma of stone fruit. Taste has soft sourness, overripe fruit. Very tasty.

Pour is a black with a small tan head. Aroma is a big raspberry with some char malt and alcohol. Flavor is a thick sweet cloying raspberry, a minor roasted malt with a little alcohol heat. Finish leaves a nice berry on the tongue as this goes down. I don’t get much "Belgian" aspects out of this but as a fruit flavored porter this is fine just a little bit too much of boozy hotness.

Bottle: Slightly hazy pale gold, white head. Orange, wheat aroma. Wheat malt, orange-lemon taste..... Ok, but not a lot of zest to it.

Bottle. Rather mild from the start for such a darker looking brown beer. When I saw alt, i thought I may not like it but this stuff comes across more like a gentlemanly dark lager. Yes, civilized and well-to-do with. enjoyable. One of the better beers I brought back in a few cases from total wine in durham. Hides the alky well. Good crisp co2. Fun session overall. Right up there with the better tasting alts like Erie Brewing Heritage, Schell Schmaltzs Alt, Long Trail Ale or Penn Alt er Ego, if not better. Yes, I think this may be the best alt I’ve had over the last 25 in the style I’ve tasted.

Bottle, best by 11/2015. Looks a little like a cloudy heffe. Smells like old high gravity lager. Taste is big freakin rude dull hops kick in the face. No freshness in this fer sure. Difficult and medicinal, I swear it has many of those old ice lager malt likker attributes. Cannot enjoy. If it wasn’t for the buzz catching effects, I may give up on this one. A big happy BS dull pine turpentine palate wrecker. wew.
