Description
Big Boss has been through a lot of incarnations. In 1996 Tomcat Brewing started which became Pale Ale (it was really owned by the same people), then it became Rock Creek, and that’s when Brad Wynn became involved. Rock Creek became Chesapeake Bay for a very short time and nearly went under. We came back and started Edenton, and then, fortunately, Geoff Lamb bought it and we became Big Boss.

Pours amber from the bottle. The thin, frothy white head lingers. Aroma is dominated by oak with lesser notes of bourbon and lesser still of pumpkin. Taste is mildly bittersweet, full of rich oak and vanilla with a dash of spice. No real trace of pumpkin. Body is medium, texture a bit watery at times, warm at the end. Overall a nice one and a refreshing change to have a barrel aged brew with a relatively modest ABV.

Small dark beige head over near-black beer. Very vinous nose, with dark chocolate, wood, melanoidins, bit of lactic acid. Dark chocolate with dried (red) fruit. Roasted, fortified wine, chocolate, liquorice. Light sourishness, fruity. Again chocolate with red fruit - Sachertorte ohne Sahne? Medium bodied, quite slick; medium carbonation. The bottle calls itself stout. It's both - stout and sour. And good;

Bottle from Boxbeers. Pours amber to golden brown with a moderate sized short lasting off-white head. Aroma of wood, sweet malt, citrus, sour berries and caramel. Light sweetness, heavy sourness, touch salty. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Tart fruit, slightly vinegar finish. Enjoyed this.
