About
Grimm Artisanal Ales is a Brooklyn-based brewery founded in 2013 by Joe and Lauren Grimm after nearly a decade of tinkering with fermentation. Grimm specializes in concise, elegant ales epitomizing the creative, experimental spirit of the American artisanal beer revolution. With each limited edition release, we seek to push the boundaries of style and flavor in order to create beers with the utmost depth and complexity. For five years, Grimm operated as a nomadic brewery. Joe and Lauren would develop each recipe in the kitchen of their Gowanus apartment and travel to existing breweries near and far to craft their commercial beers.

Low tan head on a near black body. Nose features dark chocolate, ripe dark berries and vanilla with a slightly metalic, ashy edge. Rich dark chocolate, chocolate milk, cinnamon, blackberries, roasted malt and butter create a rich IS mix. Dense and slightly slick. Sweet, but holds it together thanks to the additional tastes.

A full, well laced white head on a clear straw body. A mild nose has elements of citrus and tropical fruit with a touch of yeast. A lot less taste and bitterness than expected. Some Grapefruit, lemon and tropical fruit hoppiness, but a lot less than advertised. Honeyed malt, some grain a touch of yeast round out a well balanced but disappointing taste profile. A bit of an ouch on the claim to be a hop bomb. There are nonetheless some nice fruity hop elements at work here.

A dense and active well laced white head on a slightly murky light gold body. The nose blends elements of tropical fruit punch, melons and sweet malt. The hop profile is relatively understated but still fresh and engaging. Juicy citrus fruit, melons and kiwi blend nicely with the sweet malt. A touch of soapiness in the finish. The new west coast IPA style done to a T.

An off white head over a rich golden body. The NZ and Aussi hops produce a lively fresh tropical lead taste. Melons, kiwi and orange flavours are well supported by a slightly caramel bread malt backbone. Slick mouth feel and lots of staying power. I’d have been even more impressed if they had done all this with only 6% ABV rather than 8.

If it is a variation of a west coast IPA, its all about those juicy, punchy hops. This one hits the mark. On tap at Bottle Caps. A gold and straw body with a well laced dense white head. The nose is big and fresh featuring grapefruit, orange and sweet malt. The taste is about the hops and the hop profile is gripping and complex. Grapefruit, grapefruit rind, pineapple, lemon and pine resin are all juicy and fresh. Simple, understated bready malt, and hints of honey, soap and pepper round it out. Solid rich body for an IPA with a smooth mouth feel. A beauty!

16oz can from Tavour. Orange/golden pour, looks like orange juice, paper thin layer of fine foam, streaky lacing. Citrusy aroma, grapefruit and tangerine. Taste hits with a zesty burst on the tongue, citrusy, oranges, and even more zesty at the finish, along with some ABV warmth. Stops short of being dank
