Description
Established in 2014, owner Seamus McMahon has set up a lovely brewery in one of the old sheds, located behind the milking parlour. This brewery is set up on a working Dairy Farm. The team have renovated the shed to exacting specifications. The brewery is set amongst the rolling drumlins of County Monaghan. Our aim is to create distinct beers that are brewed with care and affection. We have created a range of well balanced and flavoursome ales that reflect the changing face of the beer market in Ireland.

500ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, Jan 24. Pours dark, good beige collar. Prominent whisky influence on the nose alongside a robust roast presence. Continues to taste, excellent dark malt shades, molasses.. comes together well.

8th January 2024, Shrewsbury Beer Share in Chez Sophie, five guys and loads of beers! I brought this 500ml capped and waxed 500ml bottle: BB 17th January 2026. Beige crust on a black body. Really enjoyed this, good whiskey undertone below a malty and chocolatey base. Boozy and warming, very pleasant all round.

Bourbon barrel version of this Irish barleywine, bottle shared with Craftmember at Bar Beenhouwer. Frothy and firm, egg-white, slowly receding head on a very dark chestnut brown robe with coppery glow โ€“ much darker than average for a barleywine. Aroma of dry caramel, pecan nuts, autumn leaves, soggy toast, rosemary, brown bread crust, vague notes of clove and liquorice in the background, walnut oil, touch coffee, old wood โ€“ but the bourbon as such remains very subtle. Dryish onset, dried autumn fruits (blueberries) and figs, softish carb, full and bit vinous body; lovely pecan-nutty, brown-bready and dry-caramelly maltiness with walnutty โ€˜crustโ€™, the toasty aspect of which pairs well with a firm, leafy hop bitterness in the finish, aided by tannic woodiness and indeed, but only in the very end, a whiff of bittersweet bourbon colouring it all. The alcohol as such, however, remains perfectly hidden in this wonderfully balanced, solidly structured beer โ€“ a barley wine with certain Scotch influences, I would say. Brehon never disappoints!

500ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, Nov 23. Thanks Jeremy for this! Pours dark brown, off-white cap. Pleasant deep dark malt elements, soft roast, but a very light whisky feel unfortunately. Went quite nicely with a mince pie.

Monday 27th November 2023, Monthly gathering in Chez Sophie. 500ml bottle brought by me, BB 10th December 2023, so just in date! I also provided the mince pies to go with this brew. Beige head on a dark body, looked a bit 'mean' to be honest. Malty with a slight whiskey note or two, thin bodied for a barrel aged Porter in my opinion, but I did enjoy it.

500ml bottle @ monthly tasting, Chez Sophie, Oct 23. Thanks Jeremy for this, and for the Christmas pudding which we paired this with. Pours black, tan head. A bit fizzy, a touch thin.. like Jeremy says lacks the richness and depth of malt one expects - nay, demands - of a red wax sealed bottle.. no brandy and little in the way of dried dark fruits, but it's a pleasant stout all the same.
