Description
The beer of Val Dieu is synonymous of quality and authenticity. It is the only Belgian abbey beer to be 100% brewed in a living abbey such as the famous Belgian Trappist beers. The monks of the Abbey of Val Dieu are the ones who are at the origin of the beers which are brewed today on the site. Historically, the Cistercian monks were famous for their qualities as brewers. The monks of Val Dieu are in line with this reputation.

(Bottle 33 cl) Slightly cloudy golden beer with a creamy, white head leaving some lacework. Marked yeasty aroma and some coriander up there too. Soft and lightly malty with a weak perfumy touch from the coriander. Only the slightest hint of hops in the finish. A very accessible and pleasant "Blonde" that hardly can offend anyone. On the other hand it’s not really very thrilling. 270905

Drunk under the name of Blanche Trois-Ponts Huge dense white head; greenish tinted muddy yellow. Coriander, laurel, and another perfumed aroma - liquorice and wheat? Honey flavour, but without sweetness, much rather wheaty milk-acidity, little citrus, with a spicey, near-bitter background, and on the whole a very flowery character. A very good wheat AAMOF. Root spices, citrus and only some orange-like sweetness retronasal. Light to medium bodied, quite refreshing. A quite good witbier, which is a rare find.

Orange-amber beer, hazy; with a very creamy, off-white head, leaving lace. Very perfumed and leafy nose, smells of roasted malts, nutty as roasted peanuts. Again quite roasted, toast-like taste. Remarkably little bitterness (isn’t ginseng supposed to be bitter?). Retronasal some citrus, orange-like. Quite burning MF. Rather well bodied, and sweet aftertaste. I am under the impression that the original Vervifontaine beers were more spiced, characterised by the ginseng. This is rather sweet.

Bottled. Dark amber coloured, beigeish brown head. Strong aroma and flavour of toothpaste (anise, fluor etc). Also some hints of soap and licorace. Strange sweetness present all the time (most likely from the ginseng).

Bottled. Hazy yellowish (brown notes) colour, huge foamy head. Fruity aroma with some dishwatery hints. Sweet flavour of fruit along with yeast and soap or "skincare" notes. Weird sweetness in all three La Swaf!s most likely the ginseng.

Bottled (BB 01/2006, so is propably a bit old bottle, what is good of course :))
Clear ruby color, big foamy head, lace. Aroma has leather, hints of horse planket, oak, dry hay and strawberry. Foamy, carbonated mouthfeel. Dry, slightly metallic, some grassy hops. A bit alcohol burn in the finish, more warming alcohol in the aftertaste. Quite hard dubbel, not sweet at all. Aroma is more complex than straightforward flavor.

Bottled (BBE 10/2007)
Hazy pale yellow, big foany head. Aroma has not much juniper but artifical lemon - Two Dogs type. Light, citrus crisp mouthfeel. Soda pop lemon in the flavor too, very faint flavor of juniper. Dissapointing lame brew from normal high-standard Val-Dieu.
